The donkey race between the six districts of Cembra
The Palio Raglio is the most anticipated folk festival of the summer in Cembra, the main town of the valley of the same name in the municipality of Cembra Lisignago, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Inspired in a lighthearted and tragicomic way by the famous Palio di Siena, the event features donkeys as the undisputed stars, racing through the streets of the historic center guided by jockeys from the local districts.
The village of Cembra is historically divided into six districts, each with its own colors, flag, and a strong sense of belonging:
During the Palio, the streets are filled with drapes and colorful flags in an atmosphere of healthy local rivalry that involves both young and old. The Palio is not just a race, but a true village festival where every resident feels part of a united community.
The heart of the event is the nighttime donkey race: three laps through the historic center, with jockeys riding donkeys drawn by lot among the districts. The race is preceded by a parade of the six districts along the main avenue and the drawing of the Palio lottery. The winning district is carried in triumph and celebrated until Ferragosto.
The Palio Raglio was founded in 1984 and has marked the Cembra summer for over forty years. The 2025 edition celebrated its fortieth anniversary. Alongside the competition, the program includes "It's a Knockout"-style games between the districts, live music, DJ sets, and social gatherings for all ages. In recent years, the tradition has also embraced inclusivity, with the first female jockey guiding a donkey for the districts.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Cembra together with the Cembra Estate Group and represents an opportunity to discover the Cembra Valley, famous for its terraced vineyards, dry-stone walls, and mountain wines. The Palio Raglio offers free admission and attracts thousands of visitors to the village's historic center every year.
The 2026 Palio Raglio brings the historic center of Cembra to life on August 13 and 14 with games, parades, music, and the donkey race.
The winning district is celebrated and carried in triumph until Ferragosto.
Cembra can be reached by car from Trento (about 20 km) by driving up the Cembra Valley along the SP71 road. The nearest train station is Trento, which is connected to Cembra by local bus lines. The event takes place in the historic center of the village.
Free admission. The program takes place on Saturday and Sunday evenings; the donkey race is held at night on Sunday.
We recommend arriving early to watch the district parade and find parking near the center. If you are staying overnight, the Cembra Valley offers agritourism farms and accommodations nestled among the vineyards.
