About Palio Raglio

The Palio Raglio is the tragicomic Trentino version of the famous Palio di Siena. In the historic center of Cembra, in the Cembra Valley, six districts compete with donkeys and jockeys in a night race that lights up the Ferragosto holiday. Established in 1984, the Palio combines tradition, games, live music, and local pride over two days of free festivities. Colorful flags, parades, and the iconic donkey race make this event one of the most beloved summer highlights in Cembra.

The Cembra Donkey Palio

The Palio Raglio is the most anticipated folk festival of the summer in Cembra, the main town of the valley of the same name in the municipality of Cembra Lisignago, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Inspired in a lighthearted and tragicomic way by the famous Palio di Siena, the event features donkeys as the undisputed stars, racing through the streets of the historic center guided by jockeys from the local districts.

The six districts

The village of Cembra is historically divided into six districts, each with its own colors, flag, and a strong sense of belonging:

  • Carraia
  • San Pero
  • San Rocco
  • Piaggi
  • Padana (Fadana)
  • Campagna Rasa

During the Palio, the streets are filled with drapes and colorful flags in an atmosphere of healthy local rivalry that involves both young and old. The Palio is not just a race, but a true village festival where every resident feels part of a united community.

The donkey race

The heart of the event is the nighttime donkey race: three laps through the historic center, with jockeys riding donkeys drawn by lot among the districts. The race is preceded by a parade of the six districts along the main avenue and the drawing of the Palio lottery. The winning district is carried in triumph and celebrated until Ferragosto.

History and tradition

The Palio Raglio was founded in 1984 and has marked the Cembra summer for over forty years. The 2025 edition celebrated its fortieth anniversary. Alongside the competition, the program includes "It's a Knockout"-style games between the districts, live music, DJ sets, and social gatherings for all ages. In recent years, the tradition has also embraced inclusivity, with the first female jockey guiding a donkey for the districts.

Cembra and its valley

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Cembra together with the Cembra Estate Group and represents an opportunity to discover the Cembra Valley, famous for its terraced vineyards, dry-stone walls, and mountain wines. The Palio Raglio offers free admission and attracts thousands of visitors to the village's historic center every year.

The 2026 edition of the Palio Raglio takes place in Cembra on August 13 and 14, featuring two evenings dedicated to the challenge between the six districts and the traditional nighttime donkey race in the historic center. Free admission.
