The Palio dello N'Su Contro lo N'Giù is the most cherished festival in Tavernelle, a populous hamlet in the municipality of Panicale, in the province of Perugia. The name refers to the division of the town into two districts: Porta Sant'Anna ("lo n'sù", the upper part, with yellow-blue colors) and Porta San Pietro ("lo n'giù", the lower part, with red-green colors).
Ten games to win the palio
The two districts face each other in over ten popular games that involve the residents of Tavernelle: tug-of-war, sack races, magna svelto (eating contests), wheelbarrow relay race, pass the apple, tramutamo, and the climbing challenge, as well as other tests of skill. The competition unfolds between Piazza Mazzini, Via del Commercio, and Viale della Resistenza, with residents of all ages lined up to defend their colors.
Market, food, and community celebration
Alongside the races, the event features an artisan and vintage market, food stalls, and the evocative launch of the challenge between the districts. Organized by the socio-cultural association Gioventù Tavernellese, the palio is a festival of identity and good cheer that strengthens the community spirit of Tavernelle, offering visitors the authentic atmosphere of Umbrian district rivalries.
Palio dello N'Su contro lo N'Giù — edition 2026
The 2026 edition, the eleventh, of the Palio dello N'Su Contro lo N'Giù takes place in Tavernelle (hamlet of Panicale, PG) from July 16 to 19. The contest between the Porta Sant'Anna district ("lo n'sù", yellow-blue) and the Porta San Pietro district ("lo n'giù", red-green) is renewed.
The event opens with the artisan and vintage market, the opening of the food stalls, and the launch of the challenge between the two districts. In the following days, the races follow one another: tug-of-war, sack races, wheelbarrow relay race, eating contests, and other skill tests, up to the decisive competitions that award the palio. The event is organized by the Gioventù Tavernellese association.
