Lo N'Su versus Lo N'Giù: Tavernelle's Challenge
The Palio dello N'Su Contro lo N'Giù is the most cherished festival in Tavernelle, a populous hamlet in the municipality of Panicale, in the province of Perugia. The name refers to the division of the town into two districts: Porta Sant'Anna ("lo n'sù", the upper part, with yellow-blue colours) and Porta San Pietro ("lo n'giù", the lower part, with red-green colours).
Ten Games to Win the Palio
The two districts compete in over ten popular games involving the residents of Tavernelle: tug-of-war, sack races, magna svelto (eating contests), wheelbarrow relays, apple pass, tramutamo, and climbing, as well as other skill-based challenges. The competition takes place in Piazza Mazzini, Via del Commercio, and Viale della Resistenza, with residents of all ages defending their colours.
Market, Food, and Community Celebration
Alongside the races, the event features an arts and crafts and vintage market, food stalls, and the evocative challenge launch between the districts. Organized by the socio-cultural association Gioventù Tavernellese, the palio is a celebration of identity and fun that strengthens the community spirit of Tavernelle, offering visitors the authentic atmosphere of Umbrian district rivalries.
Palio dello N'Su contro lo N'Giù — edition 2026
The 2026 edition, the eleventh, of the Palio dello N'Su Contro lo N'Giù takes place in Tavernelle (hamlet of Panicale, PG) from July 16th to 19th. The contest between the Porta Sant'Anna district ("lo n'sù", yellow-blue) and the Porta San Pietro district ("lo n'giù", red-green) is renewed.
The event opens with the arts and crafts and vintage market, the opening of the food stalls, and the challenge launch between the two districts. The following days feature the competitions: tug-of-war, sack races, wheelbarrow relays, eating contests, and other skill-based challenges, culminating in the decisive competitions that award the palio. The event is organized by the Gioventù Tavernellese association.
