A week of games, sports, and music between the districts of Montecorvino Pugliano

The Palio delle Frazioni is a popular event that, at the end of summer, transforms the entire territory of the Municipality of Montecorvino Pugliano, in the province of Salerno, into a vast, widespread stage filled with games, shows, and flavors. For an entire week, the various districts of the municipality compete in a series of challenges that involve much more than just a ranking: at stake is the sense of belonging to one's own community, a value that is still strongly felt in these parts.
Montecorvino Pugliano is not a single, compact town: it is a mosaic of districts scattered between the Picentini hills and the Piana del Sele. From Santa Tecla to Pugliano, from Gallara to San Vito, each village fields its own team and becomes the protagonist of a competition that blends sports, tradition, and conviviality. In the most recent edition, there were over two hundred registered participants, a number that speaks volumes about how deeply the Palio has become part of the town's emotional calendar.
The heart of the event is the sequence of challenges that mark the days: sports trials, traditional games, and team competitions designed to involve all ages, in a format that recalls the spirit of the old «Jeux Sans Frontières» (Games Without Frontiers) revisited in a local key. Teams train, organize, and prepare flags and colors: the week of the Palio is preceded by weeks of preparations involving families, associations, and district committees.
Beyond the competitions, the Palio is above all a festival. The evenings are filled with live music and shows, while food stalls offer a journey through local products: Cilentana and Picentina cuisine, cheeses from the Piana del Sele, homemade desserts, and traditional Campanian peasant dishes. It is the moment when the Palio ceases to be a competition and becomes one long, shared table.
The event culminates on the final Sunday, when Piazza Giovanni Paolo II hosts the awards ceremony for the winning district. It is the most anticipated moment: choirs, flags, applause, and the roar of the winning district as they lift the trophy. Immediately after, the square turns into a musical arena for the closing concert, which over the years has brought well-known names from the Neapolitan scene to Montecorvino Pugliano.
Located a few kilometers from Salerno, the Municipality of Montecorvino Pugliano occupies a fortunate position between the slopes of the Monti Picentini and the fertile Piana del Sele, in Campania. It is an agricultural and hilly territory, with ancient villages overlooking the gulf and a town life still marked by patronal feasts and summer events. The Palio delle Frazioni fits into this fabric: it is not a re-enactment built for tourists, but a festival born from the community and for the community, which is precisely why it feels authentic even to those arriving from outside.
Those visiting the Salerno area in early September will find in the Palio delle Frazioni a rare opportunity: to witness a real, free, and open village festival, where you eat well, laugh a lot, and understand in a few hours how the identity of a territory works. It is also a good starting point for exploring the surroundings, from the Salerno coast to the villages of the Picentini, with Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast a short distance away.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Palio delle Frazioni of Montecorvino Pugliano. In previous years, the event took place in the first week of September, with opening events in the districts and a grand finale in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II.
District team registrations are usually opened in the weeks preceding the event. This page will be updated with dates, rules, and the full program as soon as they become available.
By car: Take the Pontecagnano exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, then follow signs for Montecorvino Pugliano (about 15 km from Salerno).
