The historic challenge between the five districts of the medieval village of Bobbio
In the heart of the Trebbia Valley, the village of Bobbio — in the province of Piacenza, in Emilia-Romagna — hosts one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in the Piacenza Apennines every year: the Palio delle Contrade. The event, whose origins date back to 1956, stages the ancient rivalries that animated the village in the 12th century, when the community was divided into districts named after the gates of access to the medieval city.
The protagonists of the challenge are the five districts of Bobbio, each with its own distinctive color and banner:
The district members, dressed in the colors of their district, compete for two days for the coveted title of Contrada Regina, in a succession of tests of strength and skill that involve the entire town.
The most evocative moment is the evening historical pageant, which winds through the streets of the center with dozens of costumed figures for each district, accompanied by rhyming taunts, flag-wavers, and musicians. The days are marked by the most traditional competitions: the greased pole race (palio della cuccagna), the tug-of-war, the egg toss, the archery, the wheelbarrow race, and the sponge race. There are also medieval markets, historical dances, and fireworks displays that beautifully conclude the festival.
The setting is Bobbio, recognized among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and famous for the evocative Ponte Gobbo (or Devil's Bridge) over the Trebbia river and for the Abbey of San Colombano. Experiencing the Palio means immersing yourself not only in a popular festival but also in the history and traditions of an area with intact charm. Admission to all events is free, organized by the Pro Loco of Bobbio "Quelli che Pontano" together with the Municipality of Bobbio.
The Palio delle Contrade di Bobbio 2026 returns on the last weekend of June, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28, confirming the tradition that has animated the village in the Trebbia Valley since 1956. The five districts — Porta Alcarina, Porta Legleria, Porta Frangula, Porta Agazza, and Porta Nova — compete for the title of Contrada Regina amidst a historical pageant, flag-wavers, ancient games, and popular celebration.
The detailed program with final times will be published by Pro Loco Bobbio "Quelli che Pontano" in the weeks preceding the event.
