The medieval historical re-enactment of Castell'Arquato
Relive the Middle Ages is the historical re-enactment that every September brings back the atmosphere of the 14th century to Castell'Arquato, a medieval jewel in the Alta Val d'Arda, in the province of Piacenza, in Emilia-Romagna. Listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy and awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club, the municipality serves as a natural backdrop for an event that attracts enthusiasts, families, and curious visitors from all over the region.
The origins of Castell'Arquato date back to the Middle Ages: in 1316, the village underwent the famous siege by Galeazzo Visconti, which marked the beginning of the Visconti rule and the construction of the imposing Visconti Fortress (1342-1349). Piazza del Municipio, a symbol of the three powers—religious with the Collegiata, military with the Fortress, and political with the Palazzo del Podestà —becomes the heart of a perfect setting for the re-enactment.
Along the Lungo Arda Park, a large medieval camp is set up with encampments, merchants, and armed men, while activities unfold over two intense days:
All around, the medieval market offers artisans, herbalists, and period stalls, while jesters and acrobats animate alleys and squares. The medieval tavern serves dishes and drinks in pure style, completing an immersive experience that engages sight, taste, and imagination.
Curated by the association Gens Innominabilis, the re-enactment combines historical accuracy with fun. The setting of the stone village, the well-preserved houses, and the grandeur of the Fortress make "Relive the Middle Ages" one of the most evocative historical re-enactments in Emilia-Romagna, ideal for a late summer outing to discover the history and landscape of the Piacenza Apennines.
The new edition of the historical re-enactment in Castell'Arquato will take place on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, 2026. The dates have been confirmed by the official tourist channels of Emilia-Romagna and the Alta Val d'Arda.
For 2026, the activities that characterize the event curated by Gens Innominabilis are expected to return: medieval camp and encampments, tournaments in armour and archery, siege engine launches, evening fire show, grand field battle, market with artisans and herbalists, and medieval tavern.
The complete program with times, locations, and details of the shows will be announced by the organizers on the official website and social media channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Detailed program to be published. The traditional activities of the re-enactment are expected over the two days of September 12-13, 2026: opening of the medieval camp, tournaments in armour, archery tournament, siege engine launches, evening fire show, and the grand final field battle. Times and details will be published on the event's official website.
Castell'Arquato is located in the province of Piacenza. By car: take the A1 motorway, exit at Fiorenzuola d'Arda, then take the SP for Castell'Arquato (approx. 15 km). By train: Fiorenzuola d'Arda station on the Milan-Bologna line, then take a bus to the village.
The medieval camp is set up in Lungo Arda Park (Viale Remondini), while parades and shows also take place in the historic village and Piazza del Municipio.
Admission to the event is ticketed (in recent editions, around €7 per day, €10 for two days, free for young children). Updated prices and times are published on the event's official website.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets of the village. Take the opportunity to visit the Visconti Fortress, the Collegiata, and the museums in the Palazzo del Podestà .
