The Palio delle Contrade in San Paolo di Civitate

The Palio delle Contrade is one of the most recent and heartfelt events in San Paolo di Civitate, a town in the Tavoliere delle Puglie, in the province of Foggia. The inaugural edition took place in the summer of 2025, organized by the "Le contrade" APS association, with the explicit goal of promoting local culture and history through a re-enactment of traditional games. Although it is a young tradition, the Palio draws inspiration from ancient roots, bringing the spirit of district-based rivalry typical of the Capitanata villages back to the town square.

The four competing districts

The heart of the Palio is the challenge between the four districts into which the town is ideally divided, each with its own name and identity:

• Contrada dell'Aquila
• Contrada del Bue
• Contrada della Civetta
• Contrada San Paolo

The districts compete for the Palio in a series of trials, fostering a spirit of healthy competition that involves both young and old and brings the town center to life.

Ancient and traditional games

The teams face off in ancient and traditional games that revive the gestures and crafts of yesteryear. Among the most characteristic trials is the basket race, reserved for women: a competition that recalls the past, when women used baskets to transport food or everyday items. Each game thus becomes an opportunity to revive the rural memory of the territory and pass on Apulian folk traditions to new generations.

A village in the Tavoliere delle Puglie

San Paolo di Civitate is situated in the Upper Tavoliere, an area of the Capitanata rich in history; nearby, one can find traces of the ancient city of Civitate. The Palio delle Contrade is part of the town's summer festival calendar and represents a moment of gathering for the entire community, as well as an attraction for those visiting this corner of northern Puglia, just a stone's throw from the Gargano and the border with Molise.

The 2026 edition

At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizing association. As it is a very young event, the program is usually released in the weeks leading up to the festival, which was held in August during its first edition. We recommend following the channels of the "Le contrade" association and the Municipality of San Paolo di Civitate for updates on dates and scheduled games.
