About Fedelissima Civitas Trophy

Every summer, the Open-Air Theatre of Castellaneta transforms into an arena of flags, drums, and clarions. The Fedelissima Civitas Trophy Flag-Wavers and Musicians Festival brings together some of Southern Italy's finest historical groups for a competition of tosses, spins, and costumed musical performances. Organized by the Pro Loco "Domenica Terrusi," the event celebrates the city's historic resistance against French occupation—an act that earned it the title of "Fedelissima Civitas"—in the heart of the Taranto province, Puglia.

A dive into the Middle Ages through the streets of Castellaneta

The Fedelissima Civitas Trophy Flag-Wavers and Musicians Festival is one of the most evocative summer highlights in Castellaneta, a town in the province of Taranto, Puglia. For one evening, the historic center and the Open-Air Theatre on Via Enrico Mastrobuono step back in time, brought to life by waving flags, rolling drums, and the piercing sound of clarions, with performers in lavish period costumes parading through the crowd.

A competition between historical groups from Southern Italy

The festival is a true competition: each year, some of the most highly regarded Flag-Wavers and Musicians Groups (GSM) from Southern Italy are invited to challenge one another before a panel of experts in various flag-throwing disciplines—small team, pairs, individual, and large team. At the end of the performances, the Fedelissima Civitas Trophy is awarded, a coveted prize that changes hands every year. Past editions have featured groups from Barletta, Lucera, Oria, Torremaggiore, Bernalda, Bari, Capurso, and Catanzaro, showcasing the interregional scope of the event.

The meaning of the title "Fedelissima Civitas"

The name of the trophy is no coincidence: it recalls a pivotal episode in Castellaneta's history, when the city distinguished itself through its staunch resistance to French occupation, earning the honorary title of Fedelissima Civitas (Most Faithful City). The historical re-enactment thus becomes an opportunity to rediscover and celebrate the roots of the local identity, with the stated goal of promoting Castellaneta through popular traditions and folklore.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Castellaneta "Domenica Terrusi", in collaboration with Pienne Produzione Eventi, and supported by the Municipality of Castellaneta. The evening, which offers free admission, draws a large crowd every year and stands as one of the flagship events of the Castellaneta summer.

Fedelissima Civitas Trophy — edition 2026

The dates for the 2026 edition of the Fedelissima Civitas Trophy Flag-Wavers and Musicians Festival have not yet been announced by the organizers. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to return to the Castellaneta Open-Air Theatre in the summer, most likely in early August. The program and the list of participating groups will be published by the Pro Loco "Domenica Terrusi" in the weeks leading up to the event.

At the moment, the Pro Loco Castellaneta "Domenica Terrusi" has not yet announced the official date or the lineup for the 2026 edition of the Fedelissima Civitas Trophy. However, the event remains a staple of the Castellaneta summer: as soon as they become available, the date, the invited flag-waving groups, and the evening's program will be updated in this entry.
