The historical re-enactment of Arsoli featuring a costume parade, archers from the four districts, and flaming arrows
Every year at the end of June, the medieval village of Arsoli, located in the province of Rome at the eastern edge of the Lazio region in the picturesque Aniene Valley, dresses up for the Palio dell'Amico. The event transforms the streets of the historic center into a 16th-century fresco, with ladies, knights, jesters, commoners, flag-wavers, and archers parading to the rhythm of drums at the foot of the majestic Castello Massimo.
The Palio celebrates two memories deeply tied to the town's identity. The first is the founding of the Arsoli community, attested by the Regesto Sublacense in a document dated June 28, 997; this is why the re-enactment was established in 1997 for the Millennium celebrations. The second is the figure of Amico Passamonti, the most illustrious Arsoli native of the 16th century, a valiant leader who fought against the army of Charles V during the Sack of Rome and distinguished himself in 1529 in the defense of the Florentine Republic, until his capture at the Battle of Gavinana in 1530. The sword awarded each year to the winning district and kept until the following edition is dedicated to him.
The heart of the challenge is the Company of Archers of the Four Historic Districts of Arsoli: the town's neighborhoods face off in an archery competition along the characteristic Salita al Campo, vying for the Palio. Before the match, the champions receive a solemn oath and blessing in Via Salita al Campo, a deeply evocative moment that officially opens the competition.
The historical parade in period costumes is the visual soul of the festival: it winds through the village accompanied by musicians and performers, recreating the lord's court. As evening falls, the District Banquet takes place in Piazza Valeria, a grand popular feast where one can taste traditional local dishes—from porchetta to regional specialties—accompanied by fine wine and beer. Residents are encouraged to wear their district's colors in a spirit of healthy rivalry and shared celebration.
The grand finale is the flaming arrows show: in the darkness of the night, archers shoot lit darts while sword and fire performances illuminate the streets of the center, providing a spectacular moment to close the day. The streets, decorated and lit by torches, complete an atmosphere of times gone by.
Recognized among the historical re-enactments of Lazio, the Palio dell'Amico is much more than a show: it is the moment when the entire community of Arsoli reclaims its history. Organized by the Pro Loco Association of Arsoli APS together with the Company of Archers, the event attracts visitors every year from across the Aniene Valley and the province of Rome, offering an authentic day of history, entertainment, and tradition.
The thirtieth edition of the Palio dell'Amico animated the historic center of Arsoli on June 28, 2026. In the afternoon, the historical parade began with the Lords and Archers of the Four Historic Districts, followed by the oath and blessing of the champions in Via Salita al Campo and the dispute of the Palio with the archery competition. In the evening, the District Banquet took place with food stands and, as a finale, the flaming arrows show.
Arsoli is located in the upper Aniene Valley, at the eastern edge of the province of Rome, on the border with Abruzzo. By car, take the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway, exit at Carsoli-Oricola, then drive a few kilometers towards Arsoli. By train, the Arsoli station is served by the regional Rome-Avezzano-Pescara line.
The Palio dell'Amico takes place at the end of June. The 2026 edition, the 30th, is scheduled for June 28, 2026.
Access to the event and the historic center is free. The District Banquet with a medieval dinner requires reservations; there are also food stands offering porchetta sandwiches, local specialties, and beer.
