About Palio del Traino

The Palio del Traino is a historical re-enactment held every June in Acquaviva delle Fonti, in the heart of Puglia. The event brings to life an ancient rural tradition: local districts compete by manually pulling heavy wooden carts, the "traini," just as producers once did to secure the best spots at 17th-century fairs. Two days of races, costume parades, live music, folk dancing, and tastings of typical Puglian products.

A deep dive into Puglian rural life

The Palio del Traino is a cultural and tourist event held in Acquaviva delle Fonti, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of Puglia. Established in 2024, this re-enactment is rooted in rural traditions and transforms the town's streets and squares into a large open-air stage for two days, blending tradition, popular sport, and conviviality.

The origins: the carts of 17th-century fairs

The event revives a custom documented since the 17th century. During major fairs, producers would arrive at the market with their horse-drawn wooden carts, known as "traini." Due to the crowds and limited time, they would unhitch their animals immediately upon arrival and manually pull the heavy carts, racing to secure the best spot to display and sell their goods. It is this frantic race that the districts re-enact today as a competitive challenge.

The challenge between districts

The heart of the event is the cart-pulling race: local districts field teams of athletes who take turns manually pulling the cart along a set course, while one member manages the brake with a rope. The qualifying rounds and finals determine the winning district, which is awarded the palio and local products. The competition combines strength, strategy, and a strong sense of community pride.

The festival program

Alongside the races, the Palio del Traino offers a rich calendar of activities:

  • Processions and parades evoking rural life and the fairs of the past;
  • Live music with local bands and guests, theatrical performances, and folk dances;
  • Food stalls featuring local products: wine, olive oil, cheeses, grains, and fruit;
  • Local crafts and exhibitions showcasing the town's excellence;
  • Workshops and guided tours designed for children and families.

A defining event for the territory

Organized by the Palio del Traino Association, the event has quickly become a defining appointment for the community of Acquaviva delle Fonti, successfully promoting the memory of rural civilization and attracting visitors from all over Puglia. It is a festival that looks to its roots while keeping an eye on the future, involving citizens of all ages in the rediscovery of local traditions.
