The traditional gozzo boat regatta challenging the ten seaside districts of Salento

In the heart of the Salento summer, the waterfront of Porto Cesareo—a jewel of the Ionian coast in the province of Lecce, Puglia—becomes the stage for one of the region's most cherished maritime competitions: the Palio dei Rioni. This is not a horse race like those found inland, but a spectacular rowing boat competition that honors the ancient technique of local fishermen, who rowed standing up, propelling their gozzi with sheer arm strength and deep sea wisdom.
Porto Cesareo is traditionally divided into ten historical districts, each with its own maritime symbol, colors, and flag. The districts competing on the water are Centro Storico, Poggio, Punta Grossa, Torre Lapillo, La Strea, Riviera di Levante, Bacino Grande, Scalo di Furno, Cina, and Corea. Each district fields a local rowing crew aboard a wooden gozzo built by the Cantiere Latino of Porto Cesareo: these boats are identical in length, weight, and oars, ensuring that the outcome depends solely on the athletes' strength, rhythm, and teamwork.
The boats gather at the Riviera di Levante, the starting point of the race. From there, the rowers navigate to two turning buoys and return to the finish line in a timed heat; the winner is determined by the highest total points. Traditionally, two heats are held throughout the summer, between July and August, with the final ranking based on the combined results. Alongside the men's race, a women's competition is also held, reflecting a community that has successfully renewed this ritual without losing its soul.
The Palio is much more than a sporting event: it is a celebration of identity that ignites friendly rivalry between the districts and brings the entire town together on the waterfront. The day begins with a marching band parading through the streets, continues with the regatta watched by hundreds of spectators from the quay, and concludes with award ceremonies, live music, and the Salento pizzica dance animating the evening. The colors, flags, and chants of the districts frame an event that, since its inception in 2010, has quickly become a symbol of the local summer.
The setting is the Porto Cesareo Protected Marine Area, featuring white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and the famous Rabbit Island (Isola dei Conigli). Attending the Palio means discovering the most authentic side of this fishing village, where the bond with the sea is not just a postcard cliché but a living memory, passed down from generation to generation through the ancient art of rowing.
The 2026 edition of the Palio dei Rioni of Porto Cesareo will bring the wooden gozzi of the ten seaside districts back onto the water for the customary summer regatta on the local waterfront. As of today, the official 2026 dates have not yet been communicated by the organizers. Following tradition, the competition takes place in two timed heats between July and August, with the final ranking combining the results of the men's and women's races. The detailed program will be published by the Pro Loco of Porto Cesareo in the weeks leading up to the event.
The regatta takes place along the Riviera di Levante and the Sambati waterfront in Porto Cesareo (LE), with the start and finish visible from the quay. Award ceremonies and evening shows are held in Piazza Nazario Sauro.
By car: SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli, exit for Porto Cesareo, then SP359. By train: Nardò-Centrale station on the Ferrovie Sud Est line, with bus connections to Porto Cesareo. Nearest airport: Brindisi-Casale (approx. 70 km).
The event takes place outdoors on the waterfront and is free for the public. Arriving early is recommended to secure a spot along the quay.
