A friendly challenge between the districts of Gaglianico, featuring games, competitions, and community spirit.
In the small town of Gaglianico, in the heart of the Biella province in Piedmont, there is an event that makes the whole town's heart beat faster every year: the Palio dei Rioni, known to everyone as "Insieme per Giocare". This is not a historical re-enactment with costumes and horse races, but something perhaps more authentic: a great community festival where the town's districts compete in a friendly manner, with the sole goal of being together and having fun.
The event features six districts, each with its own colors and group of supporters. Competing for the Palio are the teams from Castello Pralino, Piazza, Falciano, Savagnasco, Tabbie, and the Ex Residenti (Former Residents), made up of those who grew up in Gaglianico but now live elsewhere and return every year to support their colors. The name of the winning district is engraved on a wooden trophy depicting the town fountain, which remains in the Town Hall until the following edition.
The Palio program is designed to involve all ages. Over the years, challenges have ranged from five-a-side football to table football (with men's, women's, and junior categories), from bocce to Scala 40 card games, from the famous tug-of-war to Connect 4 for the little ones, as well as sack races, relays, and team tournaments. There is no shortage of social gatherings, such as the singing quiz for the over-60s or the competition for the best chocolate bread cake, a symbol of local tradition.
Beyond the competitions, the Palio weekend comes alive with shows, theatrical sketches, street food, and a parade that winds through the town streets to gather in the main square. The event, organized by the Genitori e Oltre association with the patronage of the Municipality of Gaglianico, was born with a clear goal: to help people rediscover the pleasure of socializing and the spirit of belonging to their district. It is a highly anticipated appointment that residents mark on their calendars well in advance, confirming year after year the vitality of this corner of the Biella area.
