The Palio de lu Ricchiappe is the defining cultural event of the City of Chieti, a provincial capital in Abruzzo. It takes place every year on May 11th, the day dedicated to Saint Justin, the city's patron saint. The race winds through the heart of the historic center, transforming streets and squares into a vibrant theater of colors, drums, and flags, drawing thousands of residents and visitors alike.

From 'barberi' horses to runners

The event is rooted in a tradition documented since the mid-17th century, when festivities for the patron saint included the famous 'barberi' horse race along the city streets. The name itself stems from an ancient local saying, «lu cavalle bbone se vede a lu ricchiappe» (a good horse shows its worth at the finish line), testifying to how deeply the race is embedded in local culture. For safety and animal welfare reasons, the contemporary version has replaced horses with mixed pairs of runners—a man and a woman linked by a bridle—who compete on behalf of the districts into which the city is ideally divided.

The challenge between districts

The Palio is a test of speed, coordination, and neighborhood pride. Each district fields its own pair, and the crowd gathers along the route to cheer for their colors. The race runs from Piazzale Sant'Anna along Via Padre Alessandro Valignani, Via Arniense, Corso Marrucino, Piazza Valignani, and Via Pollione, all the way to the finish line. Victory is often accompanied by excitement and surprises, creating an atmosphere of authentic popular competition.

Historical pageant and spectacle

The day is about more than just the race. In the afternoon, a historical pageant in period costume takes place, accompanied by the Chieti City Band and flag-wavers, featuring the symbolic figures of the 'Mater' and 'Pater' and the speech by the Palio Governor. The festival also includes the Under-15 Palio for younger participants, athlete presentations, entertainment, and the final awards ceremony.
