Within the Estate Campolese calendar, the Palio Campolese is one of the most anticipated and well-attended events of the year. Every summer, in mid-August, the village of Campoli Appennino, in the province of Frosinone, transforms into a large open-air playground: the streets and squares of the historic center become the stage for a playful and engaging challenge, born from the desire to gather and renew the bond between generations.
The heart of the event is the competition between teams, who face off in a series of traditional games, relay races, and skill tests designed to put strength, speed, and team spirit to the test. The challenges, which take place throughout the day, involve participants of all ages and draw the public into an atmosphere of healthy rivalry and great joy. It is a festival where enthusiasm, participation, and fun matter more than victory.
The Palio Campolese has its roots in a long-standing local tradition: the memory of the festival is also evidenced by archival footage documenting editions from decades ago, a sign of how much this event is part of the identity of Campoli Appennino. Keeping its spirit alive are the Pro Loco and the young members of the Giovani Campolesi association, who oversee the organization every year and involve the entire community.
Nestled at an altitude of about 650 meters in the Comino Valley, in the heart of Ciociaria, Campoli Appennino is a small village in Lazio known as the town of the Bear and the Truffle, at the gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Its historic center, dominated by a medieval tower and surrounded by a landscape of woods and mountains, offers an authentic setting in which to experience the Palio not just as a competition, but as an opportunity to discover a territory rich in nature, history, and genuine flavors.
Free and open to everyone, the Palio Campolese is designed to be a village festival in the fullest sense of the term: a moment when residents, vacationers, and visitors mingle in the squares, amidst cheering, laughter, and traditional local dishes. Those spending the summer in the Comino Valley will find the Palio the perfect opportunity to breathe in the most genuine atmosphere of the Ciociaria summer.
