About Paesaggi Sonori

Every summer, the traveling festival Paesaggi Sonori brings one of its stops to Gessopalena, in the province of Chieti. The event features a sunset concert amidst the ruins of the ancient village carved into gypsum, set in the evocative natural theater of Pietralucente at the foot of the Maiella. Conceived by Massimo Stringini and Flavia Massimo, the festival weaves together singer-songwriter music, landscapes, and hiking, bringing Italian and international artists to Abruzzo in locations accessible only on foot or via sustainable transport. It is a slow, twilight listening experience under a sky that glows as evening falls.

Paesaggi Sonori in Gessopalena

Paesaggi Sonori is a music and landscape festival that hosts concerts within natural areas and sites rich in history and cultural heritage across Abruzzo. Among its recurring destinations is Gessopalena, a town in the Province of Chieti on the slopes of the Maiella, where the festival chooses one of its most evocative settings every year: the ancient village, an uninhabited medieval settlement carved into gypsum known as Pietralucente, which seems to light up with its own glow at sunset.

A concert reached on foot

The festival's formula is as simple as it is radical: no urban stages, but places earned by walking. The concerts are held at sunset and are accessible exclusively on foot or by sustainable means, ensuring arrival just as the music begins and the pale stone of the old village reflects the last rays of the setting sun. It is an intimate, twilight listening experience, immersed in one of the most distinctive landscapes of the Abruzzo hinterland.

The philosophy of the festival

Created by Abruzzo natives Massimo Stringini and Flavia Massimo, Paesaggi Sonori was born from the idea of enhancing the region's natural and cultural wonders through music, art, and the environment. Each edition touches different municipalities in Abruzzo—from the plateaus of L'Aquila to ancient ruins, medieval fortresses, and wild clearings—building a geography of slow and conscious listening. In Gessopalena, the festival finds a unique natural theater where the landscape of the abandoned village becomes an integral part of the concert.

Singer-songwriter music, international outlook

The programming favors research and singer-songwriter music, with a particular focus on female voices and international artists: over the years, names from Scotland, Korea, Norway, Switzerland, and Africa have performed alongside protagonists of the Italian scene. The Gessopalena stop is part of a summer schedule spread across several municipalities between the provinces of L'Aquila and Chieti.

A festival for the territory

More than just a series of events, Paesaggi Sonori is a community project involving local administrations, associations, and volunteers. For the Municipality of Gessopalena, the event represents an opportunity for visibility and the revitalization of the ancient village and its territory, in an area of Abruzzo that makes silence, landscape, and hiking its most authentic values.

Paesaggi Sonori — edition 2026

The Paesaggi Sonori festival returns every summer with its stops in the most evocative places in Abruzzo. The dates for the 2026 edition in Gessopalena have not yet been announced: the official program currently includes appointments in other municipalities in the Province of L'Aquila. This page will be updated as soon as the organization confirms a stop in Gessopalena, in the province of Chieti, as has happened in previous editions at sunset in the ancient village of Pietralucente.

For summer 2026, the Paesaggi Sonori festival has announced a series of sunset concerts in the natural and historical sites of Abruzzo. At the moment, no stop has been announced for Gessopalena (Province of Chieti): the dates and locations dedicated to the ancient village and the natural theater of Pietralucente have not yet been made public.

As is tradition, the concerts are reached on foot or by sustainable transport and are held at sunset. This page will be updated as soon as the organization publishes any appointment in Gessopalena for the 2026 edition.

Practical information — Paesaggi Sonori

How to get there

Gessopalena can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (take the Torre de' Passeri / Casoli-Sant'Eusanio exit depending on your direction) and then following the provincial roads of the Val di Sangro. The ancient village and the natural theater of Pietralucente are reached on foot from the town: it is recommended to arrive early for the climb and to enjoy the sunset.

Tips

Bring comfortable trekking shoes, a flashlight for the return in the evening, and a light jacket: at sunset, at the foot of the Maiella, the temperature drops. Access to the concert venues is exclusively on foot or via sustainable transport.

Tickets

Information on entry, reservations, and pre-sales is published on the official website and the festival's social media channels; in previous editions, bookings were managed through online ticketing platforms.
