Grain, plows, and old-time folk songs in the Serra di Mezzo district
Some festivals are born from a saint, others from a product of the land. The P'satura and Ancient Plowing Festival in Teora, in the province of Avellino, was born from a gesture: that of those who, until a few generations ago, measured the value of an entire year with grain. The p'satura—the weighing of the grain in the local dialect—was a collective, almost ritualistic moment that concluded the harvest cycle and brought families, neighbors, and farmhands together in one place. Recreating it today is not just a postcard-perfect display of folklore: it is a way to hold together the community of Alta Irpinia and its deepest identity.
The festival does not take place in a town square but where it makes sense to be: in the open countryside, in the Serra di Mezzo district, among the fields overlooking the Ofanto Valley. It is an open-air setup, without stages or scenery: the audience gathers along the field and watches the maneuvers up close, with the colors of the Irpinian sunset serving as a backdrop. Those who arrive in the late afternoon will already feel the festive atmosphere, amidst the chatter of the people and the scent of freshly turned earth.
The heart of the day is the weighing and ancient plowing demonstration, which in recent editions opens the program in the early afternoon. The tools are original, recovered from the village's homes and stables; the techniques are explained step by step by the community's elders, the only ones who have truly practiced them. For younger generations and visitors, it is an open-air history lesson, far more effective than any museum display.
After the demonstrations comes the most anticipated moment, the traditional competitions, which in past editions have seen teams of locals and guests challenge each other:
The challenges are open to teams registered on-site and conclude with an awards ceremony, accompanied by applause and the affectionate banter typical of village festivals.
As evening falls, the field transforms into a food festival. The kitchen offers traditional Irpinian peasant dishes—in previous editions, pasta and beans and sausage sandwiches—accompanied by wine, water, and beer, along with tastings of typical Teora products. The soundtrack is provided by old-time songs and dances, with folk music groups leading the audience in tarantellas and group dances until late at night.
Teora is a small town of just over 1,400 inhabitants in the interior of Campania, rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake and now known for its lively summer of events, the «R...Estate» festival, which fills the calendar with food festivals, concerts, and sports events from late June to mid-August. The P'satura and Ancient Plowing Festival is one of the most defining moments of this program, promoted by the Municipality of Teora together with the Pro Loco and Coldiretti. Those visiting Alta Irpinia during this period can combine the festival with the discovery of nearby villages, Irpinian DOCG wines, and the Apennine landscapes that separate the Ofanto Valley from the Formicoso plateau.
The date changes slightly from year to year, but the festival is consistently held between late July and the first days of August, always on a Saturday. It is a village event, authentic and unfiltered: you stand, eat at communal tables, and go home with the feeling of having understood a little more about the relationship between these mountains and the grain.
The festival returned to the Serra di Mezzo district in Teora on Saturday, July 25, 2026. The event was part of the official 'Teora R...Estate 2026' calendar, the municipality's summer festival which brought together food festivals, concerts, tournaments, and charity events from June 27 to August 16.
As per tradition, the day was dedicated to the weighing and ancient plowing demonstration, using original tools from Alta Irpinia's rural heritage, followed by traditional competitions and an evening of food, songs, and folk dances.
The festival is organized by the Municipality of Teora in collaboration with the Pro Loco and Coldiretti.
The official program of the 'Teora R...Estate 2026' festival scheduled the weighing and ancient plowing demonstration for Saturday, July 25, 2026, in the Serra di Mezzo district, dedicated to the area's agricultural traditions.
The detailed hourly schedule for the 2026 edition was not released online. In previous editions, the day was structured as follows: 4:00 PM weighing and ancient plowing, 6:00 PM traditional competitions, 8:00 PM food festival with folk songs and live music.
