Ten days of Marian devotion and neighborhood festivities around Piazza Luigi Palomba
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is one of the most cherished events in the religious calendar of Torre del Greco, a Vesuvius-side city in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. The cult of the Virgin of Mount Carmel, traditionally linked to the scapular given to Saint Simon Stock, falls on July 16th. In Torre del Greco, it is centered around two parishes: the Preziosissimo Sangue in the Via Lava Troia area, and the central Carmine Church in Piazza Luigi Palomba, which serves as the hub of the city's celebrations.
Here, the occasion is more than just a liturgical event: it is the collective name day for all those named Carmela, Carmine, and Carmen, and a moment when an entire neighborhood finds its identity in its sacred image.
In 2026, the festival holds special significance as it marks the 60th anniversary of the Coronation of the sacred image. The papal bull was approved by Paul VI on May 16, 1965, while the actual coronation took place on September 11, 1966, in Piazza Luigi Palomba, performed by the Archbishop of Naples, Cardinal Corrado Ursi, who had succeeded Cardinal Castaldo just months earlier. The crown, offered by the faithful and citizens of Torre, was crafted by the Giovanni Ascione & Figlio firm using coral, pearls, diamonds, and sapphires—a detail that directly reflects the coral and cameo craftsmanship that has made Torre del Greco world-famous.
To mark the anniversary, the parish extended the celebrations with a Peregrinatio Mariae: from May 2nd to 20th, 2026, the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel left her church to be welcomed by the city's peripheral communities. After visiting the Sanctuary of the Buon Consiglio and Santa Maria la Bruna, the image stopped at the SS. Crocifisso, the Preziosissimo Sangue, San Vincenzo a Postiglione, and the Sacred Heart at the Cappella Bianchini, before returning on May 20th with a solemn procession. This neighborhood pilgrimage was designed, as parish priest Father Mario Pasqua explained, to rediscover the rosary and share a message of hope, peace, and belonging.
The heart of the festival remains in July. From the 6th to the 16th, the parish marks each day with a rhythm that has become part of the district's soundscape:
This daily routine is complemented by catechesis on Marian iconography, Eucharistic adoration with the singing of Vespers, the First Communions of the parish children, and, on the eve of the feast, the First Vespers and the performance of the Akathistos Hymn by the City Choir.
The day of the solemnity begins very early with dawn lauds and a blessing at 5:30 AM, followed by a dense succession of Holy Masses throughout the morning. The most anticipated moment arrives in the evening: the Eucharistic Celebration on the church square, followed immediately by the traditional procession that carries the image of the Madonna through the streets of the neighborhood. The route is intentionally detailed, designed to reach the sick, the elderly, and those unable to attend the parish, amidst decorated balconies, festive lights, and the band accompanying the pageant.
For some years now, the religious dimension has coexisted with a popular civil festival, the Agorà Party, organized in the parish's outdoor spaces and the streets around Piazza Luigi Palomba. Craft stalls, food stands, festivals featuring Neapolitan cuisine, children's dancing on the church steps, karaoke, live music sets, book presentations, and soccer tournaments on synthetic grass pitches transform the neighborhood into an open-air agora for two evenings. This is the part of the festival that most engages young people and families.
Participating in the Carmine Festival also means discovering one of the most identity-rich cities in the Gulf of Naples: nestled at the foot of Mount Vesuvius and overlooking the sea, Torre del Greco is the world capital of coral and cameo carving, home to the Basilica of Santa Croce, the Vesuvius villas of the Golden Mile, and the gateway to the Vesuvius National Park.
2026 marked sixty years since the Coronation of the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which took place on September 11, 1966, in Piazza Luigi Palomba by the hand of Cardinal Corrado Ursi, Archbishop of Naples, based on the bull approved by Paul VI on May 16, 1965. For the occasion, the parish of Santa Maria del Carmine in Torre del Greco built a journey lasting several months.
From May 2nd to 20th, 2026, the image left the church to be welcomed in the city's communities: after the Sanctuary of the Buon Consiglio and Santa Maria la Bruna, the stops included the SS. Crocifisso (May 9-10), the Preziosissimo Sangue (May 11-12), San Vincenzo a Postiglione (May 13-14), and the Sacred Heart at the Cappella Bianchini (May 15-17). On May 20th, the solemn return took place, with a celebration at 7:00 PM and a procession at 8:30 PM.
From July 6th to 16th, the usual daily prayer itinerary took place, enriched by catechesis, Eucharistic adoration, First Communions, and the Agorà Party in the district streets. The eve featured First Vespers presided over by H.E.R. Monsignor Filippo Iannone and the Akathistos Hymn by the City Choir; on July 16th, the day opened at 5:30 AM with dawn lauds and closed with mass on the church square and the procession.
