About Oswald von Wolkenstein Ritt

The Oswald von Wolkenstein Ritt is the most spectacular equestrian tournament in South Tyrol. Every spring, on the Sciliar plateau, thirty-six teams of four riders compete in four tests of skill across Castelrotto, Siusi, and Fiè allo Sciliar. Established in 1983, the event blends competition, medieval tradition, and folk festivities, with historical pageants, marching bands, and flag-wavers bringing the heart of the Dolomites back in time.

A dive into the Middle Ages at the foot of the Sciliar

The Oswald von Wolkenstein Ritt is one of the most anticipated and evocative events in South Tyrol. It takes place every spring on the Sciliar plateau, in the municipalities of Castelrotto (Kastelruth), Siusi allo Sciliar, and Fiè allo Sciliar, in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. For over forty years, thousands of spectators have flocked to these valleys to witness a tournament that combines equestrian sport, historical re-enactment, and village festivities.

History: from 1983 to today

The event was born in 1983, almost as a game, from an idea by architect and artist Hanspeter Demetz, a fervent admirer of the medieval poet and knight Oswald von Wolkenstein (c. 1377–1445), one of the most fascinating figures of the late Tyrolean Middle Ages. What began as a lighthearted event has become a cult appointment over the years, capable of attracting tens of thousands of visitors and involving the entire community of the plateau.

How the tournament works

The Ride is a team competition: thirty-six quartets, each consisting of four riders, represent the various villages and farms of the Bolzano area. The teams compete for the banner by facing four tests scattered across the Dolomite landscape:

  • Ring jousting (Ringstechen) at Monte Calvario in Castelrotto;
  • Labyrinth at Matzlbödele in Siusi allo Sciliar;
  • Gallop with obstacles at the Fiè Lake;
  • Gate passage at Castel Presule.

The riders must demonstrate speed, skill, and teamwork, riding through meadows, forests, and ancient manors that provide a natural backdrop for the challenge.

More than just a race: the festival

A true folk festival revolves around the competition. The most scenic moment is the grand historical pageant, with mounted teams, marching bands, flag-wavers, performers in medieval costumes, knights, jesters, carriages, and floats parading through the center of Castelrotto. There is no shortage of live music, typical South Tyrolean gastronomy, and entertainment for families and children, making the event suitable for everyone.

Why it's worth the trip

The Oswald von Wolkenstein Ritt is much more than a race: it is a living portrait of South Tyrolean identity, where equestrian tradition, medieval history, and the extraordinary scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites merge into a unique experience. An unmissable appointment for those visiting the Sciliar plateau in spring.
