The Krampus parade in the heart of Val di Funes
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Villnösser Teiflumzug is one of the most popular Krampus parades in South Tyrol. Every year, in the first days of December, the small village of San Pietro (St. Peter), in the municipality of Funes/Villnöß, in the province of Bolzano, fills with devilish figures wearing hand-carved wooden masks, dark furs, imposing horns, and heavy cowbells. In the South Tyrolean dialect, these characters are called Teifl—the devils who, according to Alpine tradition, accompany Saint Nicholas to frighten both children and adults.
The parade has its roots in an ancient custom widespread throughout the Alpine arc, from Tyrol and Bavaria to South Tyrol. At night, before the arrival of the Saint, the Krampus descend into the villages with the clatter of chains and cowbells: a suggestive performance that evokes the symbolic struggle between good and evil as winter approaches. In Funes, this tradition is kept alive by the Villnösser Teifl association, joined by the Junge Villnösser Teifl, who organize the event every year in the heart of the Dolomite valley at the foot of the Odle group.
The Krampuslauf takes place in the village center along a fenced and monitored route for public safety. The evening opens with the lighting of the lights and the welcoming of the numerous guest groups: in recent editions, there have been over 300 Krampus from all over South Tyrol. At the start signal, the devils parade through the crowd with torches, smoke bombs, and the characteristic sound of cowbells, in an atmosphere that is both festive and eerie.
At the end of the parade, the party continues with an after-party at the cultural center (Kulturhaus) in San Pietro, featuring live music and DJ sets until late. The Villnösser Teiflumzug is much more than just a procession: it is a deeply felt event for the Val di Funes community and an opportunity to experience the winter folklore of South Tyrol in one of the most evocative valleys of the Dolomites.
The Val di Funes (Villnößtal), in Trentino-South Tyrol, is world-famous for its panoramic views of the Odle spires and its villages that remain faithful to farming and religious customs. Events like the Teiflumzug testify to how deeply popular culture is rooted in this part of South Tyrol, where traditions linked to Advent and Saint Nicholas mark the arrival of winter.
The 2026 edition of the Villnösser Teiflumzug is expected in San Pietro, in the municipality of Funes/Villnöß (province of Bolzano), as per tradition in the first days of December. At the current date, the organizers have not yet published the official date or the program for the parade. As in previous editions, the participation of numerous Krampus groups from all over South Tyrol is expected, along with a fenced route in the village center and an after-party at the cultural center. Final information will be released by the Villnösser Teifl closer to the event.
Funes/Villnöß can be reached by car from the A22 Brenner motorway, taking the Chiusa/Klausen exit and following signs for Val di Funes to San Pietro. By train, the nearest station is Chiusa, which is connected to the valley by local bus lines.
Admission to the parade is free. The event takes place outdoors in mid-winter: we recommend warm clothing, footwear suitable for snow, and caution along the fenced route, especially with children. For information: [email protected].
