The Holy Saturday Easter market in the historic square of Castelrotto
The Ostermarkt in Castelrotto (Kastelruth) is a traditional event that, every year on Holy Saturday (Karsamstag), transforms the picturesque village square into a lively spring market. At the foot of the Sciliar massif and the Alpe di Siusi, in the heart of the South Tyrolean Dolomites, this event marks the awakening of the season with a unique blend of religious, cultural, and gastronomic elements that have always defined the Sciliar area community.
The charm of the Ostermarkt lies in the authenticity of its stalls, run by local artisans and producers. Strolling through the market set up on the Dorfplatz, you can admire and purchase:
It is the perfect opportunity to bring home an authentic souvenir of South Tyrol and discover the work of local workshops in a colorful and festive atmosphere.
The most anticipated moment for families is the Easter egg hunt, scheduled for the morning: a cheerful game that brings big smiles, especially to children, who are tasked with finding eggs hidden throughout the square and its most charming corners. The morning is also accompanied by live music, wrapping the market in a typically South Tyrolean setting, featuring folk melodies and shared joy.
The Ostermarkt of Castelrotto is part of the initiatives promoted by the Castelrotto Tourist Association (Tourismusverein Kastelruth) and represents one of the most beloved spring events in the Alpe di Siusi area. The village of Castelrotto, in the province of Bolzano, is famous for its well-preserved historic center, the bell tower that dominates the square, and its strong Ladin and German cultural identity: attending the market means immersing yourself in a living tradition, amidst crafts, mountain flavors, and the authentic spirit of an alpine Easter.
The 2026 Ostermarkt in Castelrotto was held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Holy Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the village square. Visitors found the usual stalls featuring crafts and typical South Tyrolean products: hand-dipped candles, aromatic herbs, mountain cheeses, textiles, ceramics, and Easter decorations.
As every year, the program included the Easter egg hunt in the morning, highly anticipated by children, and live music, for a festive day in the heart of the Alpe di Siusi Dolomites.
The Ostermarkt takes place on the Dorfplatz (village square) of Castelrotto (Kastelruth) on Holy Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free.
