Church concert and tree lighting at the foot of the Partenio mountains

Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo is one of the smallest and most visited villages in Irpinia: situated at a modest altitude with the Partenio massif at its back and the road leading up to the Montevergine Sanctuary defining its identity for centuries. Located in the province of Avellino, Campania, this village is best known for its castagna del prete (priest's chestnut) and the tradition of the juta a Montevergine pilgrimage. In recent years, its calendar has been enriched by a deeply felt winter event: the Christmas events in the village, which officially open the festivities during the first week of December.
This is not a grand festival with high-profile names, and that is precisely its charm: it is a village celebration, organized by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco and the Youth Forum, designed first and foremost for those who live in Ospedaletto and, naturally, for those who travel up here during the winter weekends.
The heart of the opening is a double-feature afternoon. It begins with a Christmas concert in the Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, the historic center's parish church, held in the late afternoon—in 2025, it was scheduled for 5:30 PM. The chosen format is chamber music, essential and well-suited to the acoustics of the sacred building: for the eighth edition, the program was entrusted to a harp and violin duo, performing a Christmas-themed repertoire.
As people leave the church, the village comes alive: the lighting of the village Christmas tree is the most anticipated moment, symbolically marking the start of the holidays and drawing entire families to the square, with children in the front row. From that point on, lights and decorations remain lit throughout the Christmas period, turning the narrow alleys of the center into a path to be explored on foot.
For years, the Municipality has built a broader calendar around the inaugural day, which in previous editions has focused primarily on Piazza Mercato and the streets of the center. The ingredients are those typical of an Irpinian village Christmas:
In the 2022 edition, when the event was titled Natale Insieme (Christmas Together), the markets were spread over two weekends in December, starting at 4:30 PM, and concluded with the traditional Epiphany tombola drawn in January: a detail that perfectly captures the domestic and communal spirit of this festival.
The Christmas festival in Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo has never had a fixed title. Over the years, it has been announced as Natale con noi… (Christmas with us, 2021), Natale Insieme (2022), and more recently simply as the Christmas events in the village: in 2025, provincial sources recorded the eighth edition, a sign of a now-consolidated continuity. What remains unchanged is the structure: a musical opening in the church, the lighting of the tree, and then weeks of events leading up to the holidays.
Ospedaletto does not work alone. Together with Summonte and Sant'Angelo a Scala, the village is part of the Christmas in the Partenio Villages circuit, promoted with the GAL Partenio: a shared program that distributes markets, bonfires, food stalls, and Santa Claus villages across the three centers throughout December, allowing visitors to build a true Christmas itinerary among the villages of the Irpinian mountains. For Ospedaletto, the window usually reserved is the one close to Christmas, with activities starting in the late afternoon.
The Christmas experience in Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo is intimate and atmospheric: you park once and explore everything on foot, the mountain air is crisp, and the Montevergine Sanctuary is just a few kilometers away, also accessible by funicular from Mercogliano. For those seeking an authentic Christmas, far from the large urban displays, this village in inland Campania is one of the most consistent destinations in the entire province of Avellino.
The 2026 Christmas program for Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo has not yet been published. As happens every year, the announcement usually arrives in the weeks immediately preceding the event, when the Municipality, the "La Fenice" Pro Loco, and the Youth Forum define the calendar of initiatives in the historic center.
Therefore, the exact date of the opening, the names of the artists for the church concert, and the days dedicated to the markets remain to be confirmed, as well as the village's potential participation in the Christmas in the Partenio Villages circuit together with Summonte and Sant'Angelo a Scala. Those wishing to plan their visit can follow the official channels of the Municipality of Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo, in the province of Avellino, and the tourist portals of Irpinia.

By car: Take the Avellino Ovest exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then the SS374 towards Mercogliano-Montevergine; the village is about ten kilometers from Avellino. By train and bus: Avellino station, then Air Campania bus lines to Mercogliano and Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, approximately 50 km away.
The historic center is compact and partially pedestrianized during events: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
The village's Christmas initiatives are traditionally free to access, including the church concert.
In December, temperatures at the foot of the Partenio are cold after sunset: bring warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the sloping alleys. Combine your visit with: the Montevergine Sanctuary and a taste of the castagna del prete, Ospedaletto's signature product.
