The European youth orchestra in residence in Miglianico, bridging Beethoven and new symphonic music
In early July, the small town of Miglianico, in the province of Chieti, transforms into a center of classical music excellence thanks to the European Youth Symphony Orchestra (OSGE), the flagship project of the Accademia Musicale Mellianum. Each year, the initiative brings a high-value educational and artistic journey to the Abruzzo region, gathering young talents from various European countries.
The heart of the project is a week-long residency where young musicians share an intensive orchestral preparation experience, consisting of individual lessons, sectionals, and full rehearsals. It is the only orchestral project in Abruzzo that consistently brings together musicians from three European nations every year, offering students professional-level training and strengthening the Academy's international ties.
The ensemble, consisting of over sixty members, welcomes talents from Italian conservatories and the Mellianum Academy of Miglianico, alongside students from three partner schools: the Vujicsics Tihamér Zeneiskola in Szentendre (Hungary), the Państwowa Szkoła Muzyczna in Rybnik (Poland), and the Základní umělecká škola in Uničov (Czech Republic). Leading the orchestra with experience, energy, and passion is Maestro Andrea Di Mele, the project's artistic director for over fifteen years.
The residency always culminates in two evening concerts that open the project to the community: one in Miglianico and one in the evocative setting of the Cathedral of the Madonna del Ponte in Lanciano. These are highly anticipated events in the Abruzzo musical summer, attracting enthusiasts and families alike and showcasing young performers before an appreciative audience.
Born in 2005 and having grown over the years into a true international symphonic laboratory, the OSGE testifies to the commitment of Miglianico and the Mellianum Academy to using music as a common language between peoples and cultures. For Abruzzo, it is a cultural jewel that brings great symphonic music to an intimate and atmospheric setting every July.
From July 6 to 12, 2026, over sixty young musicians from Italy, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic will experience the European Youth Symphony Orchestra residency in Miglianico, under the direction of Maestro Andrea Di Mele. This edition is dedicated to Saint Carlo Acutis, the saint of youth, with a special significance given the musicians' age being close to that of the young saint.
In concert, the orchestra will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and «Acutis», a symphonic-choral poem composed specifically for the ensemble by Abruzzo composer Angelo Castronovo and dedicated to the saint.
The concerts take place in Miglianico (CH) and at the Cathedral of the Madonna del Ponte in Lanciano (CH), Abruzzo. The artistic residency is hosted by the Accademia Musicale Mellianum in Miglianico.
By car: from Pescara or Chieti via local roads connecting the Frentano area; the nearest motorway exit is on the A14 (Ortona or Pescara Sud/Francavilla). By train: reference stations along the Adriatic coast, with connections to the Frentano hinterland.
