An Argentine tango evening at the foot of the Ducal Castle of Crecchio
The Milonga dei Bizantini is a summer event dedicated to Argentine tango that brings the historic center of Crecchio, a small village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, to life. The evening takes place at the foot of the imposing Castello Ducale De Riseis-D'Aragona, which houses the Museum of Byzantine and Early Medieval Abruzzo. It is this unique setting, amidst ancient walls and medieval alleys, that gives the event its name and makes it a truly distinctive experience in the Abruzzo region.
For one night, Crecchio transforms into a meeting point for tango enthusiasts: around 150 dancers arrive from all over the region and beyond to dance in the open air. Music resonates from sunset until late at night, as couples move in an intimate and evocative atmosphere where the charm of the historic village blends with the elegance of the milonga. It is one of those evenings where past and present meet in the embrace of tango.
Milonga dei Bizantini was born from the collaboration between VivArt, known for pairing tango events with historic and artistic sites in Abruzzo, and the Associazione Calesita, an Argentine tango school led by masters Los Viola based in Montesilvano (Pescara). The initiative is supported by the municipal administration of Crecchio, which opens the village and castle spaces for this dance event.
Milonga dei Bizantini is part of a vibrant tradition of events in Abruzzo that bring Argentine tango into castles, ancient villages, and rural landscapes. More than just a dance evening, it is a way to experience the territory differently: dance becomes culture, a social gathering, and an opportunity to rediscover a place rich in history like Crecchio, one of the most characteristic villages in the province of Chieti.
The Milonga dei Bizantini 2026 is scheduled for July 11, 2026, in Crecchio, in the province of Chieti, in the usual setting of the Castello Ducale De Riseis-D'Aragona. The event, organized by VivArt and the Associazione Calesita with the Municipality of Crecchio, brings Argentine tango back to the medieval Abruzzo village. The detailed program for the evening will be released by the organizers closer to the date.
The event is held in the historic center of Crecchio (CH), at the foot of the Castello Ducale De Riseis-D'Aragona, home to the Museum of Byzantine and Early Medieval Abruzzo.
By car: Crecchio can be reached from the A14 motorway (Chieti area exits) by continuing towards the hilly inland of the Val di Foro. The nearest train station is Chieti-Pescara, from which you can continue by car.
Participation in the milonga is generally by reservation. For information and registration, it is recommended to contact the organizers (Associazione Calesita) or follow the updates from the Municipality of Crecchio.
