The grand Monday market held during the Ortisei Village Festival in Val Gardena
The Ortisei Sagra Market is one of the most anticipated traditional events of the summer in Val Gardena. It takes place in the heart of Ortisei/St. Ulrich, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol), on the occasion of the Village Festival dedicated to Saint Ulrich, the community's patron saint. The market is held on a Monday, when the entire pedestrian center transforms into a large open-air space bustling with numerous stalls.
The Ortisei Village Festival is celebrated annually on the first Sunday after July 4th, in honor of Saint Ulrich, who also gives the town its German name (St. Ulrich). The festival is traditionally ushered in by blank shots and church bells, followed by a Solemn Mass in the parish church and a parade featuring traditional Val Gardena costumes and the Ortisei brass band. On Monday, the town continues the celebrations with the grand market, which draws residents and visitors from across the valley.
The stalls offer a rich assortment ranging from local culinary specialties to artisanal products, clothing, and household goods. It is the ideal opportunity to stroll through the pedestrian streets of Ortisei, sample typical South Tyrolean flavors, and bring home an authentic memento of Val Gardena. Admission is free.
The Sagra Market is deeply rooted in Ladin culture and the community life of Ortisei. Like many mountain festivals, the market is not just a commercial event, but a moment of encounter and conviviality that sets the rhythm of the season. Among the customs associated with Val Gardena festivals is the tradition of gifting pears decorated with colorful ribbons as a sign of affection. Walking among the stalls, listening to the band, and soaking in the festive atmosphere means connecting with the most authentic soul of the town.
Ortisei/St. Ulrich is the main town of Val Gardena, world-renowned for the UNESCO-listed Dolomites, its woodcarving craftsmanship, and the Ladin language. The Sagra Market is an excellent opportunity to discover this corner of South Tyrol in its most festive guise, amidst tradition, gastronomy, and alpine landscapes.
