Four days of music, theatre, and dance in the Convent of Santa Maria di Orsoleo
There is a place, on the outskirts of Sant'Arcangelo, in the province of Potenza, that seems made for music: the Convent of Santa Maria di Orsoleo, a monumental complex of fifteenth-century origin with its church, the large cloister, and the small cloister. It is here that, every spring, the Orsoleo Spring Festival comes to life, an event that in a few years has become one of the most anticipated cultural appointments in the Val d'Agri.
Four days packed with events that mix classical music, theatre, dance, and popular tradition, all with free admission: a precise choice to return the convent to the community and visitors, transforming it for a few days into a large stage spread across naves, cloisters, and outdoor spaces.
The programme is curated by Maestro Giambattista Giocoli, artistic director, assisted by Nella Belfiore as organizational director. The festival operates on multiple levels: grand opera revisited in a chamber key, ancient repertoire, theatre for children, traditional dance workshops, and guided tours designed as sensory experiences.
The musical heart of the event is the Orchestra del Baraccano, an ensemble that performs both a nine-instrument reduction of Verdi's Aida and a programme of dances from the 16th to the 18th century repertoire. Alongside the music, there is theatre for families with the fairy tale of Hamelin revisited in a contemporary key, and workshops on southern tarantellas open to all.
Among the most original proposals are the guided tours Orsoleo a 5 sensi (Orsoleo with 5 senses), a journey that recounts the history, music, and spirituality of the convent, intertwining them with the scents and flavours of the territory. Because here, culture is not just to be heard and seen: it is also experienced at the table, with tastings of typical Val d'Agri products that accompany the festival days.
The Orsoleo Spring Festival is the result of collaboration between the Municipality of Sant'Arcangelo and the Region of Basilicata, with the support of local sponsors and partners, and dialogues with national cultural projects. It demonstrates how a village in the province of Potenza can use its architectural gem as the engine for a quality cultural offering, capable of attracting audiences from across the region.
The second edition of the Orsoleo Spring Festival takes place from Thursday, April 30 to Sunday, May 3, 2026, in the Convent of Santa Maria di Orsoleo, with a programme ranging from opera to theatre for children, from ancient dance to popular tradition workshops.
Artistic direction is entrusted to Maestro Giambattista Giocoli, and organizational direction to Nella Belfiore. The initiative is supported by the Basilicata Region and the Municipality of Sant'Arcangelo.
