About Orbetello Piano Competition

The Orbetello International Piano Competition is an international piano contest that brings over 150 young piano talents from around the world to the Auditorium of Orbetello, on the Tuscan lagoon in the province of Grosseto, every spring. Divided into Master (21-35 years), Junior (5-20 years), and Online categories, the event features both qualifying rounds and thrilling final concerts. Auditions and award ceremonies are open to the public with free admission, creating an atmosphere that blends high-level competition with musical outreach.

An international competition on the Orbetello lagoon

The Orbetello International Piano Competition is a premier piano contest for young performers embarking on their concert careers. Each spring, the Orbetello Auditorium, located in the heart of the lagoon town in the province of Grosseto, transforms into a small capital of the piano. The 2026 edition welcomed over 150 pianists, aged five to thirty-five, arriving from numerous countries worldwide.

Competition categories and format

The competition is divided into three distinct sections, designed to support performers throughout their artistic growth:

  • Master Competition (21-35 years): the top-tier category, featuring a video pre-selection, a live preliminary round, and a final concert reserved for the best performers.
  • Junior Competition (5-20 years): divided by age groups, dedicated to younger talents, from children to conservatory students.
  • Online Competition: an entirely digital section, open to candidates from all over the world who participate by submitting video recordings of their performances.

The required repertoire ranges from great Romantic and 20th-century virtuoso works—including studies by Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Debussy, and Ligeti—to classical sonatas by Haydn, Clementi, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, which are required for the final round of the Master category.

Prizes and awards

The Master category prize pool includes a first prize of 4,000 euros accompanied by concert engagements, a second prize of 2,000 euros, and a third prize of 1,000 euros, in addition to awards for the finalists. Numerous special prizes are provided by local partners, including Banca Tema, Casa Bassi, and the Rotary Club Orbetello-Costa d'Argento, with scholarships also dedicated to young performers from the province of Grosseto.

An event open to the city

The event is more than just a contest: auditions and final concerts are public and free of charge, offering the residents of the Municipality of Orbetello and visitors the chance to attend world-class performances at no cost. The competition is organized by the Kaletra Contemporanea Cultural Association, under the artistic direction of pianist Giuliano Adorno, and is closely linked to the Orbetello Piano Festival, the summer series that brings southern Tuscany to life in the following months.

Orbetello and the Tuscan Maremma

Nestled in its famous lagoon, in the heart of the Maremma and overlooking Monte Argentario, Orbetello offers a unique natural and scenic setting. Participating in the competition or attending its concerts is also an opportunity to discover one of the most evocative corners of Tuscany, amidst stretches of water, pink flamingos, and a charming historic center.
