The Euro-Mediterranean Land Music Experience amidst the Sassi of Matera
Open Sound Festival is one of the most original electronic and experimental music festivals in Southern Italy. Created to bring contemporary sound culture to Basilicata, the festival defines itself as a Euro-Mediterranean "Land Music Experience": a journey that fosters dialogue between music and places, choosing symbolic spaces such as the hypogea and the Auditorium of the Sassi of Matera and the Malconsiglio Castle of Miglionico.
The festival's program focuses on the encounter between tradition, avant-garde, and new sound aesthetics. Alongside experimental electronic music and rhythmic research, the sound roots of the territory find their space: emblematic is the presence of figures like the tambourine player Alfio Antico, a guardian of Southern percussion tradition, alongside international names from the club and research scene.
Over the years, Open Sound has hosted internationally renowned artists such as Kode9, Upsammy, Loefah, Valentina Magaletti, Katatonic Silentio, Lorem, Mai Mai Mai, Post Nebbia, and Bassolino, complementing the concerts with a cultural program of talks and panels on sound, memory, and community. The festival traditionally takes place during the Christmas period, animating the low season with a young and international audience.
The dual location between Matera and Miglionico, in the province of Matera, is one of the festival's distinctive features: the caves, the underground auditoriums, and the medieval Malconsiglio Castle become natural resonating chambers for an immersive sound experience. The event is supported by local cultural institutions and the Region of Basilicata.
For 2026, Open Sound Festival confirms its formula of a Euro-Mediterranean "Land Music Experience," with concerts, audiovisual performances, and talks in the symbolic spaces of Matera and the Malconsiglio Castle of Miglionico. As in recent editions, the event is expected during the Christmas period, in December.
The full lineup and detailed schedule will be communicated in the months preceding the event on the festival's official website and social media channels.
