The cellars of the Orvieto area open their doors
Open Cellars is the great national wine festival organized by the Movimento Turismo del Vino (Wine Tourism Movement), which every year on the last weekend of May brings thousands of wine tourists to Italian cellars. In the Orvieto area, in the province of Terni, wineries open their doors to showcase their wines and their territories.
The program includes tastings, guided tours of the cellars and vineyards, picnics in the vineyard, and e-bike tours among the vines. More than just a simple tasting, Open Cellars is an invitation to experience wine as a way to understand the Orvieto landscape, with its hills, villages, and food and wine traditions.
Among the wineries active in the Orvieto area are realities such as Azienda Agricola Palazzone, Tenuta di Freddano, Castello di Montegiove in Montegabbione, and Tenuta Vitalonga in Ficulle. In Umbria, the event involves over forty wineries associated with the Movimento Turismo del Vino Umbria, which coordinates the initiative at the regional level.
On May 30 and 31, 2026, the 34th national edition of Open Cellars, the Movimento Turismo del Vino event, returns. In Umbria, over forty wineries participate, many of them in the Orvieto area.
The 2026 edition focuses on regenerative tourism, with wine as the key to connecting with the territory, culture, and stories of the Orvieto region. The program includes tastings, guided tours, picnics in the vineyard, and e-bike tours among the vines.
Full list of wineries and details of experiences on the Movimento Turismo del Vino Umbria website.
The cellars in the Orvieto area can be reached by car from the Orvieto exit of the A1 motorway. The wineries are located in the municipalities of the Orvietano area (Orvieto, Ficulle, Montegabbione, and surrounding areas); it is advisable to plan your itinerary in advance. It is recommended not to drive after tastings.
Participation generally involves purchasing a tasting kit (glass and bag) at participating wineries. Some experiences (tours, picnics, e-bike tours) may require booking. A list of wineries and the program can be found on the Movimento Turismo del Vino Umbria website.
