Two days discovering the nature and villages of Val Borbera
The Oltregiogo Days are a widespread event organized by the Oltregiogo Association, which for two days shines a spotlight on the Apennine hinterland between Piedmont and Liguria. Each year, the event involves a group of municipalities with a program of hikes, guided tours, cultural moments, and tastings of local products, designed to showcase a territory often overlooked by mass tourism but rich in nature, history, and traditions.
In Borghetto di Borbera, located in the Province of Alessandria and the Piedmont region, Oltregiogo Days takes on a character strongly tied to the nature and landscape of Val Borbera. The municipality participates with three distinct proposals, all free and by reservation, allowing visitors to discover authentic corners of the Alessandria mountains.
Oltregiogo Days is not limited to Borghetto di Borbera: the festival embraces various villages in the valley and the Oltregiogo area, from the valley floor to the higher altitudes. Recent editions have included the Natural History Museum and the Sanctuary of Montespineto in Stazzano, the medieval center and the parish church of San Giacomo in Arquata Scrivia, the frescoes in the churches of Grondona, and the cycling routes and wineries of Vignole Borbera. A mosaic of experiences that reflects the authentic identity of a border territory.
The common thread of the event is the slow and conscious valorization of the hinterland: walking in the woods, visiting botanical gardens and places of memory, and tasting local products such as the area's cheeses and wines. Oltregiogo Days is an ideal opportunity for those seeking proximity tourism that is sustainable and in touch with nature, capable of showcasing Val Borbera and the Oltregiogo in all their nuances.
The eighth edition of Oltregiogo Days took place on Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, 2026, with a program strongly focused on the nature and villages of Val Borbera. In Borghetto di Borbera, the proposals included a visit to the Spinarosa botanical garden (with an outdoor snack on Saturday), the guided excursion towards Rivarossa and the Madonna di Rivarossa, lasting about two hours and dedicated to the history of the Resistance, and the walk in Roncoli, among the houses in the woods and the small church of Sant'Antonio. The event also involved Stazzano, Arquata Scrivia, Grondona, and Vignole Borbera, with tours, cycling excursions, and tastings of local products.
Borghetto di Borbera can be reached by car from the Vignole-Arquata Scrivia motorway exit (A7 Milan-Genoa), continuing along Val Borbera. The nearest train station is Arquata Scrivia, on the Genoa-Turin line.
Tours, excursions, and walks are free, but require mandatory booking on the official website www.oltregiogo.org. Some tastings offered in other municipalities of the valley may require payment.
For excursions, we recommend hiking shoes and clothing suitable for the mountains; bring water and a packed lunch for longer walks.
