Two evenings of flavor, music, and craftsmanship in the San Giovanni district of Vairano Patenora
NovaFest – Daily Rituals is the summer event that turns the San Giovanni district of Vairano Patenora, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania, into a vibrant space for gathering and conviviality. Promoted by the Associazione StoriaNova with the patronage of the Municipality of Vairano Patenora, the festival takes place in early July and spans two evenings, from 7:30 PM until midnight.
The core concept is captured in its title. Preparing a traditional dish, pouring a glass of wine, sitting down to eat together, or gathering in the street to listen to music are daily rituals: simple gestures that transcend time and continue to preserve a community's identity. For two nights, the neighborhood streets become a pedestrian path to be explored at a leisurely pace, animated by local excellence, craftsmanship, and activities designed for all ages.
The heart of NovaFest is the culinary journey winding through the district's alleys. It is not just a row of stalls, but a staged itinerary that guides visitors to discover what the Alto Casertano region produces and cooks.
The formula follows the well-established tradition of Campanian village festivals: free entry and pay-as-you-go consumption at individual stalls, with no fixed menu requirements.
Each evening features its own concert. The NovaFest musical program favors ensembles that draw from the folk repertoire and piazza festivities, with bands playing live among the district's houses rather than on a distant stage. In the first edition, the group Ars Nova Napoli, a symbol of Neapolitan folk, closed the event with tammurriate, serenades, pizziche, and Southern rhythms; the following edition featured the Tintarella Band and La Bandaccia.
Alongside the music, artisans and local artists showcase their work and create pieces in front of the public. One of the most distinctive activities is live screen printing, where t-shirts are printed on the spot, while the first edition left a permanent mark on the neighborhood: two murals by street artists Nedo and Trisha, designed to engage with the identity and urban landscape of the district.
The choice of the San Giovanni district is no coincidence. The organizers' intent is to restore this historic corner of Vairano Patenora as a lived-in space rather than a mere thoroughfare. For two nights, the streets are closed to traffic and filled with tables, lights, and voices: a form of light urban regeneration that relies on celebration rather than construction.
This is why NovaFest is also a deeply intergenerational event. Traditional wooden games, set up along the route, bring children, parents, and grandparents together around the same pastimes of yesteryear, while families find the evening hours—from 7:30 PM onwards—to be a quiet, village-scale environment.
Vairano Patenora is located in the Alto Casertano, in the 'Terra di Lavoro' area that connects the Volturno plain to the first Apennine foothills. The town is best known for its medieval village and the Medieval Festival, a historical re-enactment that has been transporting the town back to the Middle Ages for over fifteen years. NovaFest represents its contemporary counterpart: not a costume-clad dive into the past, but a celebration of today's daily life, food, crafts, and music as they happen now.
Promoted by the Associazione StoriaNova with the patronage of the Municipality of Vairano Patenora, the second edition of NovaFest confirmed its inaugural formula: two consecutive evenings, Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 7:30 PM to 12:00 AM, with the San Giovanni district closed to traffic and transformed into a pedestrian path.
The chosen theme, Daily Rituals, guided the entire event: cooking, pouring wine, sitting at the table, and gathering in the street to listen to music are the small gestures that hold a community together. The stages of the food trail, artisan stalls, and the stage for the two evenings were all arranged around this idea.
Both evenings from 7:30 PM to 12:00 AM, in the streets of the San Giovanni district.
The event is held in the streets of the San Giovanni district of Vairano Patenora (ZIP code 81058), in the province of Caserta. The area is pedestrianized for the duration of the event.
By car: Take the Caianello exit on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, then follow provincial roads toward Vairano Patenora; the town is located along the route connecting Teano and Venafro. By train: Vairano-Caianello station, on the Rome-Cassino-Naples line, a short distance from the town center. By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport, about an hour and a half drive away.
The two evenings run from 7:30 PM to 12:00 AM. Admission is free. A 5-euro tasting pass is available, which entitles you to three wine samples along the route; other purchases are paid directly at individual stalls.
It is best to arrive early to find parking in the streets adjacent to the district, which is closed to traffic. The route runs along slightly sloping streets in the historic center: comfortable shoes are recommended. Early July evenings can be warm, but the temperature is pleasant after sunset.
