Four days of wine, music, and flavor in the capital of Barbera
Nizza è Barbera is one of Piedmont's most beloved food and wine events, a gathering that brings the historic center of Nizza Monferrato, in the province of Asti, to life every year during the second weekend of May. For four days, the city becomes the capital of Barbera d'Asti DOCG and Nizza DOCG, welcoming wine lovers, curious visitors, and families along a journey of tastings, music, street food, and direct encounters with local producers.
The soul of the event is the Barbera Forum, set up under the historic Foro Boario Pio Corsi. Here, over 70 producers present more than 400 labels of Barbera d'Asti DOCG and Nizza DOCG for tasting, offering visitors the chance to compare vintages, crus, and different interpretations of the same great grape variety. The Forum operates in shifts throughout the days, with booking recommended, and also offers historic tastings of Nizza DOCG and a final day reserved for industry professionals.
Alongside the wine, the "Nizza, Barbera & Music" format brings three stages and a packed calendar of free concerts and DJ sets to the squares of the historic center. Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza XX Settembre, and Piazza Martiri d'Alessandria light up from the afternoon until late at night with live bands, DJs, and shows, transforming Nizza Monferrato into a grand open-air stage that blends wine culture with entertainment.
Nizza Monferrato is located in the heart of the Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The event, organized by the Enoteca Regionale di Nizza, is much more than a tasting: it is an opportunity to discover the identity of a territory where wine is culture, landscape, and community. Nizza è Barbera thus celebrates the oenological excellence of Piedmont and the hospitality of one of Italy's most renowned wine regions.
By car: Nizza Monferrato is accessible from the A33 Asti-Cuneo motorway (exit towards Monferrato) or from the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway with the Asti Est exit. By train: the Nizza Monferrato station is served by the Asti-Acqui Terme line.
Second weekend of May, from Friday to Monday. The squares and the Foro Boario come alive from the afternoon until late at night.
Musical performances in the squares are free. For the Barbera Forum, booking is recommended on the official website www.nizzaebarbera.wine; promotions on tasting vouchers are often available. Some experiences (vineyard bike tours, walks) have a dedicated cost and require booking.
