Celebrate the first day of the year with music, markets, and traditions in the Upper Maira Valley
While many celebrate the new year with fireworks and crowds, Elva chooses the path of simplicity and tradition. Perched at over 1,600 meters, this village is one of the most picturesque in the Province of Cuneo and the entire Piedmont region. It welcomes January 1st with a day that weaves together music, spirituality, craftsmanship, and mountain cuisine. The Pro Loco "La Deseno," together with local communities, organizes this event, which has become a cherished ritual for those who love the winter mountains and their gentle pace.
The day begins in the morning with artisan markets, where you can stroll and discover local creations and products. For those wishing to experience the spiritual side of the holiday, Holy Mass is held in the parish church of Borgata Serre. At noon, the focus shifts to conviviality, with the opportunity to enjoy a hot meal prepared in collaboration with local gastronomic establishments, including the Laboratorio Lou Labrier.
The heart of the event is the traditional New Year's Concert, hosted in the afternoon in the stunning setting of the Elva parish church, famous for its 15th-century frescoes attributed to Hans Clemer. Music resonates within the ancient walls for a journey through beloved songs and repertoires. To close the day, a convivial snack is offered by the Pro Loco, featuring panettone and hot drinks to toast to the new year together.
The 2026 edition of the New Year's Day in Elva, organized by the Pro Loco "La Deseno," offered a full day to start the year among the hamlets of the Upper Maira Valley. Markets, local cuisine, and music alternated in a program designed for families and winter mountain lovers.
Elva can be reached by car by driving up the Maira Valley, in the Province of Cuneo. Mountain roads require caution during winter months: always check road conditions and ensure you have winter tires or snow chains.
For the hot meal and event details, booking is recommended by contacting the Pro Loco "La Deseno" at +39 339 8204764.
Wear warm clothing and footwear suitable for snow. The Elva parish church and its frescoes are well worth a visit while you are there.
