The traditional band performance that kicks off the year in Sant'Agata di Militello
The New Year's Concert is one of the most deeply rooted events in the cultural calendar of Sant'Agata di Militello, a town in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and serving as a gateway to the Nebrodi Park. Every January 1st, the CineTeatro Aurora fills with audiences eager to hear the concert that, by tradition, officially opens the new year in this Sicilian town.
The first edition of the New Year's Concert dates back to 1997: since then, the event has been renewed every year, becoming a collective ritual for the Nebrodi community. The 30th edition, scheduled for January 1, 2026, confirms the continuity of an event that combines music and civic celebration, attracting families, enthusiasts, and citizens alike who wish to start the year with a touch of culture.
The star of the concert is the "G. Verdi" Musical Association – City of Sant'Agata Militello Band, a historic institution in the Sicilian band scene. Its origins date back to 1838, when a group of enthusiasts created a small band to accompany religious festivities and local celebrations. After suspensions due to the two World Wars and subsequent reorganizations, the association transformed into the current "G. Verdi" Association in 1995. Over the years, the ensemble has won awards in national and international competitions and has performed abroad.
Under the direction of Maestro Stefano Arasi, the band offers a program designed for a festive audience: a repertoire that spans from traditional classics to lively marches, with pieces that blend solemnity and joy to wish the entire community a happy new year. The evening is hosted by a presenter who guides the audience through the performance in a warm, family-friendly atmosphere.
Admission is free: the concert is a gift from the musical association to its city. More than just a show, the New Year's Concert represents a moment of shared identity for Sant'Agata di Militello and the surrounding Nebrodi municipalities—an opportunity to gather and celebrate the start of the year through the medium of band music, a living cultural heritage of Sicily.
