The Liberation walk along the banks of the Senio river
Nel Senio della Memoria is the Liberation walk that every April 25th crosses the banks of the Senio river, in Emilia-Romagna, in the heart of Bassa Romagna in the province of Ravenna. The route, about 18 kilometers long, connects Cotignola and Alfonsine and can be undertaken on foot or by bicycle, along the banks that for months in the winter of 1944-1945 marked the front line between Allied and Nazi-fascist troops.
The initiative is not just a nature excursion: each stage becomes an opportunity to remember the events of the war and the Resistance that marked these territories. You walk through fields, bridges, and monuments, stopping at symbolic places like the Cippo dei Martiri del Senio on the San Vitale bridge in Lugo. Along the way, readings, theatrical performances, storytelling, and musical moments curated by local artists, schools, and associations alternate.
The event has a strong choral dimension and involves the Municipalities of the Union of Bassa Romagna, including Cotignola, Alfonsine, Lugo, Fusignano, and Bagnacavallo. Departures take place simultaneously from multiple points — the Municipality of Alfonsine welcomes walkers in front of the Museum of the Battle of the Senio — to then converge towards the central stages and the afternoon arrival.
Promoted by the ISREC of Ravenna, the ANPI, and local administrations along with numerous associations, the event blends the civic commitment of the Liberation Day celebration with the convivial spirit of a village walk. Between stages, there are concerts, choirs, theatrical moments, and a community lunch along the route, making this day an anticipated event for thousands of people of all ages.
The XXIII edition of Nel Senio della Memoria was held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with the Liberation walk along the banks of the Senio river. Walkers departed at 9:00 AM from Cotignola (Gino Zoli square) and from Alfonsine (in front of the Museum of the Battle of the Senio), covering about 18 kilometers on foot or by bicycle towards the central stages.
The route included Lugo, with a gathering at the San Vitale bridge, and continued to Borgo Pignatta, the Masiera Park (site of the community lunch), Fusignano, and the Rossetta Sports Park. The day, dedicated to the theme of rejecting all wars, featured alternating storytelling, readings, art, and numerous musical moments along the banks.
Along the route, there were alternating storytelling, readings, theatrical performances, and concerts by local groups and artists.
Alfonsine can be reached by car from the SS16 Adriatica and SS309 Romea; by train, Alfonsine station is on the Ravenna-Ferrara line. The meeting point in Alfonsine is in front of the Museum of the Battle of the Senio.
The event takes place every April 25th, with departures at 9:00 AM from multiple points (Cotignola and Alfonsine). In case of rain, the walk is postponed to May 1st. Participation in the walk is free.
The community lunch along the route requires mandatory reservation (paid menu, to be booked in the preceding days). A bus service is provided for return to the municipalities of departure. For information: 366 3734214 (also WhatsApp), [email protected].
