The mechanical nativity scene of ancient crafts in the Nebrodi Mountains, Maniace
In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, in the small town of Maniace, in the province of Catania, the Pro Loco sets up one of the most admired nativity scenes in Sicily every winter. The Nebrodi Nativity Scene is not just a simple Christmas diorama: it is the reconstruction of a world, that of the rural and pastoral civilization that has animated the villages of the Sicilian mountains for centuries. Housed at the Pro Loco headquarters on Corso Margherito, the display attracts visitors from all over the Etna province and neighboring towns every year.
What makes this nativity scene unmistakable is its scenography. Instead of developing horizontally, the composition grows upwards to reach a height of 3.50 meters, on a base of four meters per side. The structure is entirely made of woven vine shoots and covered with natural moss, following an original beehive system that houses the scenes of daily life in its cavities. The result is a large green mountain populated by characters, which faithfully reproduces the shape and colors of the Nebrodi landscape.
Inside the structure, there are forty-five figures handcrafted in terracotta and fabric by master potters. Many figures are mechanized and move, giving the sense of a lively and industrious village. Each scene tells the story of a traditional craft:
At the center of this fresco of popular life is the re-enactment of the Nativity, the spiritual heart of the entire nativity scene.
Created for the first time by the Pro Loco around 2016, the Nebrodi Nativity Scene has become a highly anticipated event in the Sicilian Christmas calendar in just a few years, recognized as one of the most original nativity scenes on the island. More than just an exhibition, it represents a way to preserve and pass on the memory of vanished crafts and the material culture of the Nebrodi Mountains, giving younger generations an authentic fragment of village life.
The nativity scene can be visited every year during the holiday season, from the beginning of December until Epiphany on January 6th. Admission is free and the display is located at the Pro Loco headquarters in Maniace, easily accessible in the town center.
For the 2025-2026 edition, the Pro Loco of Maniace reopened the Nebrodi Nativity Scene to the public from December 7, 2025, to January 6, 2026, covering the entire holiday period from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany.
Once again this year, the large 3.50-meter-high beehive structure made of vine shoots and natural moss housed the forty-five terracotta and fabric figures that reproduce the ancient mountain crafts: the blacksmith, the cobbler, the basket maker, the baker, the weaver, the shepherd making cheese and ricotta, the carpenter, and the washerwoman, all gathered around the central Nativity scene. The visit was free of charge at the Pro Loco headquarters on Corso Margherito.
