Art, school, and memory at the Museum of Memory
The national competition 'The Colours of Life' is a school and artistic project born in San Giuliano di Puglia, in the province of Campobasso, in memory of the earthquake of October 31, 2002, which claimed the lives of twenty-seven children and their teacher in the collapse of the Jovine school. From that tragedy, the desire to transform collective pain into messages of hope and solidarity through the creativity of young people was born.
Promoted by the State Comprehensive Institute of Santa Croce di Magliano — of which the school in San Giuliano di Puglia is part — with the Regional School Office of Molise and the Ministry of Education and Merit, the competition involves over a thousand students from dozens of Italian schools each year, with hundreds of works competing.
The young participants compete in several sections: graphic-artistic works, comics, poetry, multimedia products, and musical compositions. The final, with the awards ceremony, takes place at the Museum of Memory in San Giuliano di Puglia, a symbolic place that preserves the memory of the victims and the community's commitment to the future.
The XXI edition of the national competition 'The Colours of Life' took place on May 26, 2026, at the Museum of Memory in San Giuliano di Puglia, with an international scope. The theme of the year, 'Build peace beyond all borders: a smile, a kind gesture open the doors to dialogue and understanding', invited young people to reflect on peace and brotherhood.
Promoted by the State Comprehensive Institute of Santa Croce di Magliano with the USR Molise and the Ministry of Education and Merit, the competition involved over a thousand students from about sixty Italian schools and from Poland, with more than four hundred works competing in the various sections.
