At 11:32 AM on October 31, 2002, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck lower Molise. In San Giuliano di Puglia, in the province of Campobasso, the Francesco Jovine school collapsed: 27 people lost their lives, twenty-six children and their teacher, Carmela Ciniglio. A tragedy that deeply marked the town and the entire region.
A Remembrance Established by Law
To ensure remembrance, the Region of Molise established the Day of Remembrance with regional law no. 29 of November 12, 2003, to be celebrated every year on October 31. On this date, the Regional Council of Molise convenes for an extraordinary session, and the official ceremony is held in San Giuliano di Puglia at the Park of Remembrance.
