The Christmas calendar of the Cilento village, from the Immaculate Conception tree to the living nativity scene
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
At just over three hundred meters above sea level, amidst olive groves, woods, and ancient paths, Rutino is one of the smallest and most intimate villages in the interior of Cilento, in the province of Salerno. With fewer than nine hundred inhabitants, the village experiences the Christmas season as a collective moment: from December 8th until Epiphany, the narrow streets of the historic center fill with lights, nativity scenes, and events that involve virtually the entire community. This is the spirit of Natale al Borgo, the Christmas program that the Pro Loco of Rutino builds every year with the patronage of the Municipality and the collaboration of the Parish of San Michele Arcangelo and local associations.
The festivities traditionally kick off with the lighting of the Christmas tree in the square on the evening of the Immaculate Conception, accompanied by folk music and costumed bagpipers. Over the years, Rutino has made a name for itself precisely for its trees: in one edition, a fir tree over fourteen meters tall was erected, while in another, a tree entirely covered in wool crocheted by the village women and decorated by the youth was dubbed "the tree that warms the heart." The finale of the program is entrusted to the living nativity scene, organized by the "Nascette a Novi" association, which transforms the alleys and Piazza Vittorio Veneto into a natural stage with actors in period costumes and reconstructed ancient crafts.
The program is not limited to the two ends of the calendar. In past editions, the village has hosted a dense succession of evenings, almost always in the church of San Michele Arcangelo or at the "Magna Grecia" social center, which serves as the village's true winter living room. Among the events that have been repeated over the years:
Alongside the shows, there are Christmas markets set up in the historic center, featuring creations by local artisans, handmade objects, decorations, and gift ideas. There is no shortage of gastronomy, which is always a protagonist in Cilento: traditional Christmas sweets, typical local products, and tastings hosted in the village shops and venues. The result is a short but dense stroll, where the village becomes a continuous journey through lights, flavors, and encounters.
Rutino, documented as early as the 10th century under the name Ruticinum, is an ancient agricultural center of lower Cilento, today divided between the historic core on the hill and the Rutino Scalo hamlet. Its patron saint is San Michele Arcangelo, celebrated in spring, but it is in winter that the village shows its most intimate side: the ecclesiastical museum attached to the church and the artistic nativity scenes set up in the village spaces offer an alternative and uncrowded visit, just a few kilometers from the Cilento coast and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
As of the update date of this page, the program for the December 2026 edition has not yet been released: this is a calendar that is usually presented between the end of November and the first days of December. The dates and events indicated above therefore refer to previous editions and should be considered as an indication of the usual format of the event, not as a confirmed program. For the upcoming edition, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Rutino and the Pro Loco, as well as local Cilento news outlets that publish the complete program every year.
As of the publication date of this page, no official calendar for the December 2026 edition of Natale al Borgo in Rutino has been released. This is perfectly normal: the Pro Loco of Rutino and the municipal administration usually present the complete program in the last weeks of November, shortly before the lighting of the Immaculate Conception tree.
The dates indicated on this page are therefore purely indicative and follow the usual format of the event, which over the years has taken place between December 8th and January 6th. No event, time, or artist name can be considered confirmed until the official program is published.
Those wishing to organize a visit to the lower Cilento village during the holidays can keep an eye on the channels of the Municipality of Rutino and the Pro Loco, as well as local Cilento news outlets that publish the complete calendar of evenings every year.
Rutino is located in Cilento, in the province of Salerno, about 80 km from the provincial capital. By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, Battipaglia exit, then SS18 towards Vallo della Lucania and provincial roads to the village. By train: the most convenient station is Rutino Scalo on the Tyrrhenian line; main hubs at Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo and Agropoli-Castellabate. The nearest airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
The events are spread throughout the historic center: the village square for the tree lighting, the church of San Michele Arcangelo for concerts, the "Magna Grecia" social center for theater, bingo nights, and parties, and Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the alleys for the living nativity scene and markets.
The village is on a hill and is best visited on foot: comfortable shoes and warm clothing are essential, as many evenings take place outdoors. Parking spaces in the center are limited; it is better to leave the car at the entrances to the village. For accommodation, you can rely on the facilities of the Cilento coast (Agropoli, Castellabate) and the inland agritourisms.
