Summer evening concerts by the Anterselva brass band in the Anterselva Valley (South Tyrol)
The Musikkapelle Antholz concerts are the highly anticipated summer evening performances by the brass band of Anterselva (Antholz in German), located in the picturesque Anterselva Valley (Antholzertal), a side valley of the Puster Valley, in the municipality of Rasun-Anterselva/Rasen-Antholz, in the autonomous province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. On summer evenings, the Musikkapelle Antholz gathers at the new music pavilion (Musikpavillon) next to the Kulturhaus Haward in Anterselva di Mezzo (Antholz Mittertal) to offer residents and visitors a series of free open-air concerts in a stunning alpine setting.
The Musikkapelle Antholz was officially founded in May 1938 under the direction of conductor Anton Holzer, although the village's band tradition dates back to the early 20th century, when a small group of wind players accompanied religious services. After an interruption due to the Second World War, the band resumed its activities in 1945 and has since become one of the most vibrant cultural institutions in the valley. Today, the ensemble, led by conductor (Kapellmeister) Thomas Mittermair, accompanies the main religious and civil events of the village, from processions to the Sacred Heart (Herz Jesu) festival, and plays a central role in the community life of Anterselva.
The evening concert program follows the classic format of the alpine open-air brass concert: marches and polkas from the Central European tradition, overtures, concert band pieces, light melodies, and modern tracks alternate in a friendly and convivial atmosphere. The evenings, which begin at 8:45 PM and conclude around 10:00 PM, are a perfect opportunity to experience South Tyrolean musical culture in the heart of one of the most authentic valleys in South Tyrol, also famous for the Anterselva biathlon center.
The Musikkapelle Antholz concerts are part of the rich summer calendar of the Dolomitenregion Kronplatz, which hosts numerous musical events and village festivals throughout July and August. The recently built music pavilion in Anterselva di Mezzo provides the ideal setting for these evenings, which are easily accessible and suitable for audiences of all ages. In case of bad weather, events may be rescheduled or cancelled.
