About Musicultura

Musicultura is the festival of popular and singer-songwriter music that every June transforms Macerata, in the heart of the Marche region, into the Italian capital of author music. After months of selections from hundreds of submissions from all over Italy, eight finalist artists compete for the audience's favour during the final evenings at the Arena Sferisterio. Alongside the competition, the 'La Controra' fringe festival animates courtyards, squares, and historic city locations for five days with free talks, concerts, and guests, weaving together music, words, and culture.

A festival that gives voice to new singer-songwriters

Founded in 1990, Musicultura is one of the longest-running and most authoritative Italian festivals dedicated to popular and singer-songwriter music. Based in the Municipality of Macerata, the capital of the province of the same name in the Marche region, the festival has established itself as a true talent incubator: every year, a panel of experts selects, from hundreds of applications from all over Italy, the eight finalist artists who perform live before the large audience of the Arena Sferisterio.

The final evenings at the Sferisterio

The festival's climax is the final evenings, hosted in the evocative neoclassical monument of the Arena Sferisterio. Here, the year's eight winners present their new songs, while the audience in the arena decides the overall winner with their vote, awarded a significant cash prize. The evenings are enhanced by the presence of major guests from Italian and international music and are traditionally broadcast by national radio, giving the festival a resonance that extends far beyond regional borders.

La Controra: the fringe festival in the historic centre

Alongside the competition, La Controra is the fringe festival that enlivens the historic centre of Macerata for five days. Courtyards, squares, historic buildings, and civic spaces become stages for concerts, meetings with authors and artists, book presentations, readings, and discussions on contemporary music and culture. Almost all of La Controra's events are free admission, making the festival an accessible experience deeply connected to the city.

A musical tradition in the Marche

  • Singer-songwriter music: the festival promotes the writing, lyrics, and originality of the new generation of Italian singer-songwriters.
  • Macerata, capital of music: for a few days, the city in the Marche becomes a meeting point for musicians, writers, journalists, and enthusiasts.
  • Widespread culture: the Sferisterio and the historic centre are integrated into a journey that combines major events and intimate moments.

Participating in Musicultura means discovering the Italian music of tomorrow in a historical and cultural context of great charm, within the walls and squares of one of the most evocative art cities in the Marche.
