The grand concert season at the Teatro Maria Caniglia in Sulmona
The Musical Season of the Camerata Musicale Sulmonese is one of the most deeply rooted and anticipated cultural events in the city of Sulmona, located in the heart of the Peligna Valley in the province of L'Aquila. Established in the 1950s, the Camerata Musicale Sulmonese ETS stands as one of the longest-standing musical institutions in Abruzzo. Each year, it presents a rich concert series running from October to March at the Teatro Comunale Maria Caniglia, a historic jewel of the Peligna region.
The strength of the festival lies in the variety of its programming: alongside grand classical and symphonic music, the stage hosts opera, jazz, dance, gospel, and musical theater. Each season features over twenty events, bringing Italian and international symphony orchestras, world-class soloists, ballet companies, and chamber ensembles to Sulmona. For years, the artistic direction has been entrusted to Maestro Gaetano Di Bacco, who has successfully given the season an increasingly broad reach and a profile of authentic prestige.
Certain events have become true rituals for the local audience: the traditional New Year's Day Concert on January 1st, complete with a celebratory toast and performances by prestigious international symphony orchestras; the Christmas Concert featuring renowned gospel choirs; dance and ballet performances; and, of course, beloved opera classics. Special projects and world premieres also feature prominently, making the Teatro Caniglia a vibrant laboratory for musical culture in Abruzzo.
The season takes place at the Teatro Comunale Maria Caniglia on Via Antonio De Nino, named after the famous soprano from Sulmona, Maria Caniglia. The elegant and intimate hall offers high-quality acoustics that enhance both orchestral and operatic performances. Through its continuous activity, the Camerata Musicale Sulmonese helps make Sulmona and the entire Peligna Valley a key reference point for classical music in Abruzzo.
The 73rd Musical Season of the Camerata Musicale Sulmonese offered 23 events at the Teatro Comunale Maria Caniglia in Sulmona, from October 19, 2025, to March 22, 2026, ranging from grand symphonic works and opera to jazz, dance, gospel, and musical theater.
