About Musica in Fortezza

Musica in Fortezza is a concert series hosted within the historic Fortress of Montecarlo, in the province of Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany. Each event combines a guided tour of the 14th-century castle—illuminated solely by candles and torches—with a live performance by renowned artists. It is an evocative journey through music, art, and history within the walls of the Rocca del Cerruglio, under the artistic direction of Roberto Bencivenga.

Musica in Fortezza: candlelit concerts in Montecarlo

Musica in Fortezza is a concert series that, from November to March, transforms the Fortress of Montecarlo into a unique stage in the municipality of Montecarlo, in the province of Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany. The formula is as simple as it is evocative: a guided tour of the castle, lit only by candles and torches, followed by a live concert. It is an experience that weaves together music, art, and history within the ancient walls of the Rocca del Cerruglio.

The Fortress of Montecarlo: the setting for the series

The Rocca del Cerruglio, now known as the Fortress of Montecarlo, is one of the most fascinating strongholds in the Lucca area. The village was named Montecarlo in 1333 in honor of the future Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg, who had helped Lucca free itself from Pisan occupation. The fortress, with its imposing triangular structure consisting of a tower and two square keeps connected by high walls, played a strategic role in the 14th-century wars between Lucca, Pisa, and Florence. It is this extraordinary historical setting, illuminated by candlelight, that hosts every concert of the series.

The concert program

The season offers numerous events from autumn to spring, with a rich and varied calendar ranging from classical music to singer-songwriter performances, and from tributes to great composers to themed concerts. Highlights from recent editions include:

  • Tribute to Astor Piazzolla with Massimo Signorini on accordion;
  • The Music of the House of Lorraine and the Rossini Recital with soprano Patrizia Cigna;
  • the Strauss Waltz with soprano Paola Cigna;
  • a harp concert with Davide Burani;
  • the Carnival Concert with Fabrizio Corucci;
  • the International Women's Day event with Maria Cioppi (soprano), Roberta Fantozzi (clarinet), and Silvia Mannari (piano).

Each evening begins with a candlelight guided tour at 5:00 PM, followed by the live concert.

Organization and artistic direction

The series is organized by the Fortress of Montecarlo in collaboration with ACT Il Palcoscenico of Rome, under the patronage of the Municipality of Montecarlo. The artistic direction is entrusted to Roberto Bencivenga. The initiative is part of a broader project to promote the cultural heritage of one of Tuscany's most charming villages, combining the discovery of historical landmarks with the pleasure of live music in an intimate and refined atmosphere.
