Live, free music on June 21st in the heart of the City of Coral
Every June 21st, the Music Festival lights up Europe with thousands of free concerts, and Torre del Greco, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples overlooking the gulf, celebrates the day with events open to all. In the City of Coral, the occasion goes beyond a simple concert: it is an opportunity to reopen churches, historic villas, and archaeological sites to the public, showcasing the identity of this stretch of Campania at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
For 2026, the Octava APS association organized "The Voice of Places," a free-entry concert hosted at the Church of Santa Maria del Pianto al Purgatorio, located at via Purgatorio 15. On Sunday, June 21st, starting at 7:30 PM, the program wove together Neapolitan classical music and famous film scores. The performance featured pianist Tetyana Sapeshko accompanying soprano Teresa Manna. The initiative was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and was included in the official program of the Italian Music Festival.
"The Voice of Places" perfectly captures the spirit of the evening: music is not merely performed in a concert hall, but breathes new life into a historic building in the center of Torre del Greco. The Purgatorio church, with its intimate acoustics, becomes a sounding board for a repertoire that belongs to the Neapolitan collective memory, from classic romances to the most beloved themes of Italian cinema. It is a formula that can be enjoyed for free, without barriers or tickets.
The Music Festival is the major European day dedicated to sound, held annually on June 21st to coincide with the summer solstice. In Italy, it is coordinated by the AIPFM under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and involves hundreds of municipalities; in Campania, dozens of cities participate, with over a hundred mapped events. The principle remains the same: live, free, and accessible music, brought out of theaters and into the city streets.
In 2025, the Torre del Greco Music Festival chose a completely different setting: Villa Sora, an ancient Roman maritime villa, restored by the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum in collaboration with the Municipality of Torre del Greco and the Vesuvius Archaeological Group. Guided tours, a performance by the Synaulia ensemble using reconstructed ancient instruments, and a tasting of recipes inspired by Apicius transformed the archaeological site into a natural stage. Two editions, two different locations: this is the hallmark of the Torre del Greco event, which selects a new site to rediscover each year.
Renowned worldwide for its coral and cameo craftsmanship, Torre del Greco is one of the most populous towns in the province of Naples, stretching between the sea and the slopes of Vesuvius. Its historic center preserves Baroque churches, noble palaces, and 18th-century Vesuvius villas: attending the Music Festival here also means discovering a heritage often overlooked by passing tourism, just a few kilometers from the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
For the European day of music, which falls on June 21st every year, the Octava APS association brought a concert to Torre del Greco designed to create a dialogue between repertoire and heritage. The choice fell on the Church of Santa Maria del Pianto al Purgatorio, at via Purgatorio 15, in the historic center of the Vesuvius-side city.
The program alternated between Neapolitan classical music and famous film scores, in a listening journey designed for a wide audience. On the improvised stage in the nave, pianist Tetyana Sapeshko accompanied soprano Teresa Manna. The event started at 7:30 PM, with free admission and recommended reservations.
The initiative was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and was registered in the official program of the Italian Music Festival, which in 2026 saw Campania as one of the most active regions, with dozens of municipalities involved. For the Municipality of Torre del Greco, it was also a way to highlight a place of worship in the historic center, returning it to the community's enjoyment.
