The Music Festival in Messina

The Music Festival is the initiative that, every June 21st, celebrates the summer solstice by filling Italian and European cities with music. Promoted by the Ministry of Culture following the model of the Fête de la Musique, the event brings free concerts to public spaces and cultural heritage sites, based on the idea of music as a universal and shared language. In Messina, the capital of the province of the same name in Sicily, the event is coordinated by the Municipality of Messina together with the Fondazione Messina per la Cultura, with the involvement of the Teatro di Messina, the A. Corelli Conservatory, the Regional University Library, and numerous local associations.

A city that becomes a stage

For an entire day, the city center comes alive with music: squares, auditoriums, and historic sites host performances ranging from classical music to brass bands, youth choirs, and performances dedicated to the Sicilian language and identity. The format features free participation open to all, designed to bring the widest possible audience closer to live music in the iconic locations of the Strait city.

Between the Cathedral, theaters, and libraries

The Messina program usually unfolds across several venues: Piazza Duomo and Piazza Cairoli for band and group performances, the Palacultura and the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele for orchestra and ensemble concerts, and the Giacomo Longo Regional University Library for study sessions, bibliographic-iconographic exhibitions, and performances dedicated to the Sicilian musical tradition. A journey that combines outreach, heritage, and live performance.

Sicilian musical identity

One of the hallmarks of the Music Festival in Messina is the focus on the island's musical roots: meetings, conferences, and concerts tell the story of Sicily as a crossroads of traditions, from Mediterranean sounds to folk instruments, and songs performed in the Sicilian dialect. A way to enhance the territory's intangible heritage within the context of a national event.

The 2026 Music Festival, now in its 32nd national edition, takes place on June 21, 2026, with the theme "The Voice of Places." The detailed program of Messina's events will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
