On June 21st, music resounds within the ancient walls of Pomposa Abbey, in Codigoro
There is an ancient bond between Pomposa Abbey and music: it was here, around the year 1000, that the Benedictine monk Guido d'Arezzo developed modern musical notation and gave names to the notes. It's no surprise, then, that every year on June 21st, coinciding with the International Music Day celebrated in over 120 countries worldwide, this extraordinary Romanesque complex in the municipality of Codigoro, province of Ferrara, becomes the vibrant heart of a day entirely dedicated to the seven notes.
Concerts are held in the most scenic areas of the abbey: the Refectory Hall with its 14th-century frescoes, the parvis in front of the basilica, and the nearby Park of San Guido Abate, shaded by the imposing bell tower nearly 50 meters high. It's an experience that intertwines musical listening with heritage discovery: evenings are often accompanied by guided tours of the monastery, as the Pomposa Music Festival is also an invitation to rediscover one of the symbolic monuments of the entire Emilia-Romagna Po Delta.
The program changes annually and spans various genres, from classical music to pop, from jazz to great tributes to Italian songwriting. The common thread remains the quality of the artists involved and the desire to make music accessible to everyone: the main events are indeed free admission. The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Codigoro, often in collaboration with neighboring municipalities in the Ferrara area and with the Regional Directorate of Museums of Emilia-Romagna, which preserves the abbey complex.
The Pomposa Music Festival is part of a broader series of celebrations related to the Millennium of the consecration of the abbey church, a cycle of events that is bringing the Abbey back to the center of the region's cultural life. Participating means experiencing an evening suspended in time, between the echo of voices, the sunset light over the Delta countryside, and the magic of a place that has made the history of European music.
The 2026 edition of the Music Festival at Pomposa Abbey marks a highly anticipated event: on June 21, 2026, at 9:00 PM, singer Nina Zilli takes the stage accompanied by the Martini Big Band, the orchestra of the Conservatory of Bologna conducted by Maestro Michele Corcella. The evening, with free admission, combines the power of a large orchestra with the charisma and repertoire of the artist, straddling soul, pop, rhythm and blues, and Italian melodic tradition. The event takes place at Pomposa Abbey, in the Municipality of Codigoro (province of Ferrara), as part of the celebrations for the Millennium of the abbey church's consecration.
The evening's repertoire covers Nina Zilli's greatest hits, rearranged for big band, blending soul, pop, rhythm and blues, and Italian melody. The concert is expected to conclude around 11:30 PM. Free admission subject to availability.
Pomposa Abbey is located along the SS309 Romea, in the hamlet of Pomposa within the Municipality of Codigoro (FE). By car: take the Ferrara Sud exit from the A13 motorway, then follow the SS16 and SS309. By train: Codigoro station, then take a bus connection towards Pomposa. Ample free parking is available near the abbey complex.
The main concerts of the Music Festival have free admission. For information and reservations: IAT Office Pomposa Abbey, tel. +39 0533 719110, WhatsApp +39 377 3219940, e-mail [email protected].
Arrive early to visit the abbey and museum before the concert and to secure a good spot. Bring a light jacket: June evenings in the Po Delta countryside can be cool.
