The Nativity comes to life within the cave dwellings of the Madonna delle Sette Lampade
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of winter, when the village of Mottola lights up for the holidays, the Living Nativity is the event that gathers the entire community around the representation of the Nativity. Now in its twentieth year, it has become one of the most anticipated Christmas appointments in the province of Taranto and all of Puglia, attracting thousands of visitors to the Murgia town every year.
What makes this nativity scene unique is not only the fidelity with which the sacred scenes are reconstructed, but above all the setting in which it comes to life: the Grotte della Madonna delle Sette Lampade, a natural rock-hewn complex that wraps the performance in a timeless atmosphere.
At the foot of the Mottola hill lie the natural caves of the Madonna delle Sette Lampade, one of the most evocative corners of Apulian rock-hewn civilization. Among the cavities carved into the rock, visitors follow an itinerary that leads them from scene to scene, as if they were truly walking through the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. The stone, the soft lighting, and the lit fires provide a realism that few settings can offer: here, the nativity is not a constructed stage set, but an ancient landscape that becomes the protagonist itself.
About a hundred performers in period costumes, sewn to faithfully reproduce the clothing of the time, animate the living tableaux of the event. The route alternates the main episodes of the Nativity — the Arrival in Bethlehem, the Annunciation, the Edict of Herod, the Procession of the Magi — with scenes of daily life and ancient crafts, with artisans intent on working as they once did. There is no shortage of tastings of local products, prepared in respect of the historical and religious context, which involve both adults and children in a journey through traditional flavors. One of the most exciting moments is the Procession of the Magi on January 5th, the eve of the Epiphany, which ideally closes the path to the Nativity cave.
The Living Nativity is organized by the Gruppo Folkloristico Motl la Fnodd OdV, a volunteer association deeply rooted in the territory, under the artistic direction of Pietro Palagiano. The initiative enjoys the patronage of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Mottola and the CSV Taranto, testifying to the cultural and social value of the event, which is the result of the work of dozens of volunteers who spend weeks preparing costumes, sets, and displays.
Located on the eastern Murgia, Mottola is known as the "balcony of the Ionian" for the view that stretches from its hill all the way to the Ionian Sea. Its territory, rich in caves and frescoed rock churches, guards one of the most important testimonies of Apulian rock-hewn civilization. Experiencing the Living Nativity here means discovering, beyond the performance, the soul of a village that has made rock and popular faith its own identity.
At the moment, the organizers have not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Mottola Living Nativity. The event, which takes place every year during the Christmas period among the evocative Grotte della Madonna delle Sette Lampade, is expected to once again feature the re-enactment of the Nativity with about a hundred performers in period costumes, scenes of ancient crafts, and tastings of local products.
The calendar and the complete program will be announced by the Gruppo Folkloristico Motl la Fnodd OdV, traditionally through their own channels and the local press. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
