About SS. Trinità Vallepietra

Every year, during the weekend of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, thousands of pilgrims—many of whom travel on foot, walking through the night—reach the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity of Vallepietra, nestled in the rock of Monte Autore at an altitude of 1,337 meters. The festival, the religious heart of the Simbruini Mountains, combines solemn masses, the procession of the companies' banners, and the evocative Pianto delle Zitelle, a sacred lauda dating back to the 18th century. It is a collective rite that has drawn the faithful from Lazio, Abruzzo, and Campania for centuries.

A sanctuary carved into the rock

The Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity of Vallepietra is one of Italy's most striking places of worship: a rock-hewn church built against the face of Monte Autore at 1,337 meters, overlooked by a natural rock amphitheater nearly three hundred meters high in the heart of the Simbruini Mountains. While the first written records date back to the 11th century, scholars suggest even older origins, perhaps linked to a pre-existing pagan site. At the center of the devotion is a rare medieval fresco of the Trinity, depicted in a Greek-inspired style with three identical, blessing figures, before which tens of thousands of faithful kneel every year. The founding legend tells of a farmer whose plow, pulled by oxen, fell into a ravine; both the animals and the tool were found unharmed, kneeling before the sacred image.

The festival on the Sunday after Pentecost

The Most Holy Trinity Festival is celebrated annually between the Saturday and Sunday following Pentecost, when the Church marks the Solemnity of the Trinity. This is the peak of the sanctuary's season, which remains open from May to October. Starting Friday evening, the "compagnie"—organized groups of pilgrims from towns across Lazio, Abruzzo, and Campania, each led by their own processional banner—begin their journey along mountain paths, arriving at the sanctuary after hours of night trekking. Celebrations continue non-stop: masses from dawn until noon, the solemn celebration presided over by the Bishop of Anagni-Alatri, the evening procession through the streets of Vallepietra, and the Sunday dawn mass.

The Pianto delle Zitelle

The most famous and moving moment of the festival is the Pianto delle Zitelle, a dramatic lauda about the Passion of Christ performed at dawn on Sunday in the sanctuary square. Composed in the early 18th century by Abbot Francesco Tozzi under the title "Mysteries of the Passion," reworked in 1835, and set in its current form in 1925, the performance is entrusted to the young women of Vallepietra. Dressed in white—except for the Our Lady of Sorrows, who wears a black tunic—they recount the fourteen mysteries of the Passion, displaying symbols of the Calvary: the chalice, the ropes, the column, the crown of thorns, the nails, the spear, and the cross. The melody, passed down orally through generations, retains echoes of Gregorian chant and the funeral laments of Southern Italy. Thousands of people attend this unique rite every year, which has been studied by anthropologists and ethnomusicologists.

The companies and the banner procession

Alongside the Pianto delle Zitelle, the festival is defined by the pilgrims' collective rites: the dendrophoria (carrying tree branches), the construction of small stone cairns along the paths, and the farewell to the sanctuary by walking a stretch of the path in reverse. The procession of the banners, with the companies marching behind colorful standards indicating their origin, turns the sanctuary square and the streets of Vallepietra into a mosaic of celebrating communities.

Vallepietra, the Simbruini Mountains, and Lazio

The municipality of Vallepietra, a small mountain village in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital on the border with Abruzzo, revolves around its sanctuary, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors during its opening season. The festival is one of the most important expressions of popular religiosity in the Lazio region and the entire central Apennines: an intangible heritage that unites faith, song, pilgrimage, and landscape in the heart of the Simbruini Mountains Regional Natural Park.
