Contemporary mosaic residency in the Modenese Apennines, within the International Symposium of Fanano
The Mosaic Workshop is one of the contemporary souls of the International Symposium of Fanano, the major art event that enlivens the Municipality of Fanano, in the Province of Modena, at the foot of Monte Cimone. For ten days, at the end of May, the Rosy O'Grady's Ranch riding stable, within the EcoArea del Lido along the Due Ponti river park, transforms into a distributed workshop where a mosaic artwork designed in dialogue with the landscape is created.
The residency is led by Prof. Leonardo Pivi, assisted by a group of students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna, a city that is a historical capital of mosaic art. The work is not carried out behind closed doors: the workshop is open to the public, so passersby can closely follow the laying of the tiles and the growth of the artwork, which also includes materials found in nature. It is a concrete way to introduce visitors to an ancient and still vibrant technique.
The Mosaic Workshop is not an isolated event, but part of the International Symposium of Fanano, an event founded in 1983 around sandstone sculpture and now relaunched in a multidisciplinary format that combines sculpture, mosaic, performance, and land art. Over the decades, the Symposium has created a true open-air museum, with over two hundred works scattered throughout the historic center and hamlets of the town. Contemporary mosaic is the most recent tile in this long Fanano story.
Around the mosaic construction site, there are moments of celebration designed for the community and visitors:
Everything takes place outdoors, immersed in the greenery of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, in a context that is part of the Fanano Living Lab project and the valorization of small villages. Admission is free, in line with the spirit of the Symposium.
The 2026 edition of the Mosaic Workshop takes place from May 19 to 28 at the Rosy O'Grady's Ranch riding stable, at the EcoArea del Lido in Fanano (MO), as a new part of the International Symposium. The residency is led by Prof. Leonardo Pivi with students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna: Chiara Ravina, Cecilia De Caro, Veronica di Felice, and Yia Zhuaran Cheng. The construction site is open to the public to follow the creation of the mosaic artwork using materials gathered from nature.
Ten days of work at the Rosy O'Grady's Ranch riding stable (EcoArea del Lido), with the mosaic construction site open to the public to witness the tile laying.
