About Mosaic Workshop Fanano

In Fanano, in the heart of the Modenese Apennines, the Mosaic Workshop is the mosaic tile of the International Symposium of Fanano: an artistic residency that brings Prof. Leonardo Pivi and a group of students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna to the town. For ten days, the Rosy O'Grady's Ranch riding stable, at the EcoArea del Lido, becomes an open-air art construction site, where a contemporary mosaic artwork takes shape with materials gathered from nature. A free event that intertwines mosaic, land art, and community.

A Mosaic Construction Site in the Apennines

The Mosaic Workshop is one of the contemporary souls of the International Symposium of Fanano, the major art event that enlivens the Municipality of Fanano, in the Province of Modena, at the foot of Monte Cimone. For ten days, at the end of May, the Rosy O'Grady's Ranch riding stable, within the EcoArea del Lido along the Due Ponti river park, transforms into a distributed workshop where a mosaic artwork designed in dialogue with the landscape is created.

Pivi and the Academy of Ravenna

The residency is led by Prof. Leonardo Pivi, assisted by a group of students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna, a city that is a historical capital of mosaic art. The work is not carried out behind closed doors: the workshop is open to the public, so passersby can closely follow the laying of the tiles and the growth of the artwork, which also includes materials found in nature. It is a concrete way to introduce visitors to an ancient and still vibrant technique.

Inside the Fanano Symposium

The Mosaic Workshop is not an isolated event, but part of the International Symposium of Fanano, an event founded in 1983 around sandstone sculpture and now relaunched in a multidisciplinary format that combines sculpture, mosaic, performance, and land art. Over the decades, the Symposium has created a true open-air museum, with over two hundred works scattered throughout the historic center and hamlets of the town. Contemporary mosaic is the most recent tile in this long Fanano story.

Events Open to All

Around the mosaic construction site, there are moments of celebration designed for the community and visitors:

  • Grand feast with food and live music, at the Altar of Time and Fertile Water, the land art installation created for the Symposium;
  • the Art Day at the Lido di Fanano, involving local schools and young people.

Everything takes place outdoors, immersed in the greenery of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, in a context that is part of the Fanano Living Lab project and the valorization of small villages. Admission is free, in line with the spirit of the Symposium.

Mosaic Workshop Fanano โ€” edition 2026

From May 19 to 28, 2026, the Mosaic Workshop returns to Fanano as part of the International Symposium, with Prof. Leonardo Pivi and four students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna working on a new contemporary mosaic artwork at the EcoArea del Lido.

The 2026 edition of the Mosaic Workshop takes place from May 19 to 28 at the Rosy O'Grady's Ranch riding stable, at the EcoArea del Lido in Fanano (MO), as a new part of the International Symposium.
