The mountain trail race at the foot of the Stone King, along the Giro di Viso paths
The Monviso Trail is one of the most evocative trail running races in Piedmont: a mountain loop run entirely in the shadow of Monviso (3,841 m), the iconic peak of the Cottian Alps, known by locals as the Stone King. The start and finish are located in Crissolo, a small town in the upper Po Valley in the Province of Cuneo, the last village before the high-altitude plateaus leading to the massif.
The race covers a 26 km loop with approximately 1,900 meters of elevation gain, following the historic trails of the famous Giro di Viso. From the center of Crissolo, the route climbs the Po Valley, passing through Pian della Regina and Pian del Re—the source of the Po River—before ascending to the Rifugio Giacoletti and reaching Lago Chiaretto. From there, it continues toward the Rifugio Quintino Sella, descends to the Rifugio Alpetto, and, after a final push toward Rocca Nera, returns to Crissolo. It is a technical, high-altitude course reserved for those prepared for mountain running.
The Monviso Trail is organized by the Fondazione Amleto Bertoni, the same organization behind the 100 Miglia del Monviso project, with technical support from A.S.D. Podistica Valle Infernotto. The race is part of a rich calendar of sporting events that bring the Po Valley and the Cuneo valleys to life during the summer, highlighting the trails and mountain huts surrounding Monviso. It is an event that combines sport, exploration of the alpine territory, and a love for the mountains.
Crissolo and the upper Po Valley also offer the perfect opportunity for a weekend of nature, hiking, and mountain tradition at the foot of Monviso.
Crissolo can be reached by car by driving up the Po Valley from Saluzzo (about an hour). The nearest train station is in Saluzzo, which is connected to the valley floor by bus lines. For those arriving by plane, the reference airport is Turin Caselle.
Meeting point, bib distribution, and start are located at the Salone delle Guide Alpine in Crissolo, in the town center.
Registration is exclusively online via the wedosport.net platform. A valid competitive medical certificate is required.
As this is a high-altitude race, appropriate technical clothing and trail gear are essential. We recommend staying in Crissolo or the surrounding area the night before, given the early morning start time.
