About Monviso Trail

The Monviso Trail is a trail running race held every late August, bringing runners to the base of Monviso, the 'Stone King', starting and finishing in Crissolo, in the upper Po Valley (Province of Cuneo). This challenging 26 km loop features approximately 1,900 meters of elevation gain, tracing the historic Giro di Viso paths and passing through Pian della Regina, Pian del Re, and three high-altitude mountain huts. An extreme challenge in one of the most spectacular settings in the Piedmontese Alps.

The trail at the foot of the Stone King

The Monviso Trail is one of the most evocative trail running races in Piedmont: a mountain loop run entirely in the shadow of Monviso (3,841 m), the iconic peak of the Cottian Alps, known by locals as the Stone King. The start and finish are located in Crissolo, a small town in the upper Po Valley in the Province of Cuneo, the last village before the high-altitude plateaus leading to the massif.

A high-altitude route

The race covers a 26 km loop with approximately 1,900 meters of elevation gain, following the historic trails of the famous Giro di Viso. From the center of Crissolo, the route climbs the Po Valley, passing through Pian della Regina and Pian del Re—the source of the Po River—before ascending to the Rifugio Giacoletti and reaching Lago Chiaretto. From there, it continues toward the Rifugio Quintino Sella, descends to the Rifugio Alpetto, and, after a final push toward Rocca Nera, returns to Crissolo. It is a technical, high-altitude course reserved for those prepared for mountain running.

A local event

The Monviso Trail is organized by the Fondazione Amleto Bertoni, the same organization behind the 100 Miglia del Monviso project, with technical support from A.S.D. Podistica Valle Infernotto. The race is part of a rich calendar of sporting events that bring the Po Valley and the Cuneo valleys to life during the summer, highlighting the trails and mountain huts surrounding Monviso. It is an event that combines sport, exploration of the alpine territory, and a love for the mountains.

Who is it for?

  • Trail runners trained for mountain racing and significant elevation gain
  • Enthusiasts of alpine environments and high-altitude terrain
  • Those looking to run in one of the most iconic landscapes of the Piedmontese Alps

Crissolo and the upper Po Valley also offer the perfect opportunity for a weekend of nature, hiking, and mountain tradition at the foot of Monviso.
