About Monterosso Grana Carnival

In the heart of the Valle Grana, in the province of Cuneo, the Monterosso Grana Carnival brings the legend of Flora and Balduino—the town's two historic masks—to life every year. Everything begins with the symbolic handing over of the town keys to the masks by the mayor: a gesture that kicks off the celebrations and reflects the spirit of a mountain community proud of its Occitan roots. An authentic village festival defined by tradition, legend, and local participation.

The Monterosso Grana Carnival

Nestled in the mountains of the Valle Grana, in the province of Cuneo, the small town of Monterosso Grana hosts a carnival that is, above all, a story of identity. Here, the masks are not generic figures of the Italian Carnival, but two characters deeply tied to the territory: Flora and Balduino, the protagonists of a legend born in these Piedmontese Alps. Each year, two local youths are chosen to portray them, receiving the keys to the town from the mayor in a symbolic ceremony that officially launches the festivities.

The legend of Flora and Balduino

The story that drives the Carnival is that of Flora, a beautiful young girl from Monterosso with blonde hair and blue eyes, who is forced by political circumstances to marry the rough Count Balduino of Pradleves. Unhappy with a man she does not love, Flora falls for the knight Corrado of Narbona, who arrives at the castle wounded. When her feelings are discovered, a jealous Balduino kills her. The legend weaves fantasy and reality to preserve the memory of a bygone world—that of the valley's mountain villages—and this tale has recently been illustrated and published in a book, a testament to how deeply rooted it is in the local identity.

A community tradition

The Monterosso Grana Carnival is a village festival in the truest sense of the word: it is born and lives through the participation of the inhabitants, who gather around the masks of Flora and Balduino and the initiatives organized by the municipality and local associations. The central moment remains the handing over of the keys, followed during the Carnival days by convivial gatherings and the masked parade through the streets of the historic center. It is an opportunity to experience the Occitan culture of the Valle Grana and the hospitality of a mountain community up close.

Monterosso Grana and the Valle Grana

Located in the historic territory of the Occitan valleys of the Cuneo area, Monterosso Grana is a village that preserves the traditions, language, and memory of a borderland alpine culture. Beyond the Carnival, the town celebrates the same legend in summer with the Feast of Saint James and the historical pageant "The Return of Flora." For those looking to discover the authentic Piedmont away from the most famous destinations, the Monterosso Grana Carnival is a stop that combines landscape, folklore, and human warmth.
