About Monterosso Almo Living Nativity

Widely regarded as one of the oldest and most beautiful living nativity scenes in Sicily and all of Italy, the Monterosso Almo Living Nativity transforms the ancient Matrice district into a miniature Bethlehem every year between Christmas and Epiphany. Along the narrow streets of this historic town in the province of Ragusa, dozens of costumed actors bring the Holy Family, the Three Wise Men, and traditional local crafts to life. The procession begins at Piazza San Giovanni at 5:30 PM and concludes at the Nativity grotto, creating an atmosphere that draws visitors from across Sicily and abroad.

One of Sicily's oldest living Nativity scenes

The Monterosso Almo Living Nativity is one of the most beloved and renowned Nativity representations on the island. Set in the evocative Matrice district—a maze of narrow alleys and courtyards forming the oldest core of the historic center—the event is organized by the Amici del Presepe Association and takes place annually between Christmas and Epiphany. Its longevity and meticulous staging have earned it numerous accolades and the reputation as one of the finest living nativity scenes in Sicily and Italy, leading to Monterosso Almo being affectionately dubbed the "Bethlehem of Sicily."

The Iblean village that becomes Bethlehem

Monterosso Almo is a small town in the province of Ragusa, Sicily, nestled in the Iblean Mountains and recognized as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy." Its historic center, with its stone houses, stairways, and narrow alleys, provides a natural backdrop for the Nativity re-enactment: no artificial sets are needed, as the village itself serves as the stage, evoking the atmosphere of ancient Palestine.

The route and ancient crafts

The performance unfolds along a path winding through the Matrice district. The procession departs from Piazza San Giovanni at 5:30 PM, guiding visitors scene by scene to the Nativity grotto. Along the way, the ancient crafts of the Iblean farming and artisan tradition—many of which have now vanished—are brought back to life:

  • the rope maker (curdaru) and the sifter
  • the blacksmith (firraru) and the stonemason
  • the cobbler (scarparu) and the washerwoman (lavannara)
  • housewives kneading bread
  • a tavern featuring live mandolin and accordion music

The route culminates at the grotto with the Holy Family, the ox and the donkey, and the Three Wise Men, in a performance curated down to the smallest detail.

A community event

The Monterosso Almo Living Nativity is, above all, a collective effort, born from the volunteer work of dozens of actors and the entire community. Over the years, it has attracted visitors not only from the province of Ragusa and the rest of Sicily but also from Calabria and abroad, particularly from Malta. It is an appointment that blends devotion, memory, and folk traditions, preserving the gestures and trades of a rural world that might otherwise be lost.

The 39th edition of the Monterosso Almo Living Nativity took place on December 26 and 28, 2025, and January 1, 4, and 6, 2026, in the ancient Matrice district.

The 39th edition of the Monterosso Almo Living Nativity brought the Matrice district to life over five days: December 26 and 28, 2025, and January 1, 4, and 6, 2026. Each evening, the procession departed from Piazza San Giovanni at 5:30 PM, winding through the historic center's alleys to the Nativity grotto.

Along the route, actors showcased traditional Iblean crafts: the rope maker, blacksmith, stonemason, cobbler, washerwoman, bread-making housewives, and the tavern with mandolin and accordion music. The event concluded with the representation of the Holy Family, the ox, the donkey, and the Three Wise Men. The president of the Amici del Presepe Association, Mario Accomando, reported a very positive outcome, highlighting the strong involvement of volunteers and the community.
